For Austria Wien, Tarkan Serbest moved to the midfield, Erik Palmer-Brown began alongside Michael Madl and Alexandar Borković in central defence. Dominik Fitz was not able to play because of an abdominal muscle strain, Maximilian Sax replaced Alon Turgeman in the offense.
LASK coach Valérien Ismaël saw no reason to change his starting line-up after a 3-1 win in the UNIQA ÖFB Cup against SCR Altach. Compared to the championship, they only rotated in the offense.
LASK started strong, Ivan Lučić had to summon all his skills in the third minute for a shot by Thomas Goiginger. Petar Filipovic scored with a free-kick but was standing offside (5’). In return, Christoph Monschein had a great opportunity for the violets lead after a pass by Erik Palmer-Brown but he put the ball next to the goal (5’). On the other side, the home team took their next chance: Austria Wien’s defence could not clear a throw-in by Marvin Potzmann, Reinhold Ranftl scored the 1-0 (7’).
Filipovic had another header opportunity after a corner by Peter Michorl, but the ball missed the goal (16’). Maximilian Sax - who had to play with a turban after a head-on collision - prevailed in the penalty area, but his cross did not find a taker (23’). A nice action by Sax and Alexander Grünwald was completed by Florian Klein, Alexander Schlager parried (36’). A shot by Grünwald during stoppage time went over the goal.
Austria Wien was able to keep up with the second-placed after a turbulent phase, won more duels than LASK, but was not able to equalize.
LASK began the second half like a raid as well: a shot by Thomas Goiginger hissed past the second pole, James Holland missed a long-range shot, a shot by Ranftl was too high (47’, 49’, 52’).
Austria Wien didn’t show much in the offence, Christian Ilzer brought Manprit Sarkaria for James Jeggo. Ivan Lučić destroyed a chance for Ranftl but our goalkeeper had no chance against a solo by Petar Filipovic. The former violet scored the 2-0 for the Upper Austrians in the 64th minute.
A shot by Alexander Grünwald was no problem for Schlager (67’), for the final phase Thomas Ebner and Bright Edomwonyi came for Michael Madl and Max Sax. The game was interrupted due to a smoke bomb from the Austria Wien fans, after a ten-minute break, the game could continue. Lučić prevented another goal against Samuel Tetteh (82’). Schlager fended off Florian Klein's last shot (90’+2’). Austria Wien lost 2-0 against LASK and thus the sixth place is already eight points away.
