0:0 against AEK Athen was not enough

In the last group game of the UEFA Europa League FK Austria Wien accomplished a 0-0 against AEK Athen, which, however was not enough to move up to the next round.

The initial position was easy, the “Violets” needed a victory. Thorsten Fink started in a 4-1-4-1 system again, after the changed formation during the game against Salzburg. Patrick Pentz started in the goal, Michael Blauensteiner moved to the right in the back four. In central defence Abdul Mohammed Kadiri returned to the team alongside Tarkan Serbest, Thomas Salamon started on the left in the back. Captain Raphael Holzhauser started in the defensive midfield, Ismael Tajouri-Shradi, Dominik Prokop, Ibrahim Alhassan and Felipe Pires formed the offensive midfield. This time, Kevin Friesenbichler started as the single striker instead of Christoph Monschein.

AEK Athen - without a defeat for nine games - only made one change to their starting line-up after beating APO Levadiakos 2-0: instead of Helder, Lopes started in the back four.

Patient “Violets”

The first shot on the target came from Galanopolos, but the ball missed the goal (5'). FK Austria Wien started with a nice move over Kadiri and Salamon, Prokop came to a finish but shot over the goal (6'). Aroujo also shot on the goal after assist by Livaja, but fortunately did not score. Friesenbichler came one step too late for a pass by Alhassan (26').

FK Austria Wien remained patient, tried again and again with long passes, tried to use fast offensive forces. AEK Athen had a free-kick, but Christodoulopoulos's shot missed the goal (42'). Goalless the teams went into their dressing rooms.

The required goal didn’t want to happen

The hosts took control after the break, their ball possession rose to 60%. Especially on the right side the “Violets” combined well into the dangerous zone. Alhassan missed after assist by Prokop (53'). A long shot by Kadiri landed with Tsintotas - the Greek goalkeeper (61'), Tajouri-Shradi shot over the goal (63'). Tsintotas punched the ball away after a shot by Holzhauser, Prokop headed the rebound just past the goal (68').

Fink brought fresh offensive power with Venuto and Christoph Monschein for Tajouri-Shradi and Friesenbichler (calf pain). However, during the final phase the last pass did not succeed. The Greeks played mainly for time and didn’t record a single chance during the entire second half. With Manprit Sarkaria for Thomas Salamon, Fink pulled his last option. But all efforts remained unrewarded, the Greeks closed up the back. AEK Athens achieved a 0-0 and made it to the UEFA European League K.o.-phase together with AC Milan.
