During the international cap break the “Violets’” injury list did not get any shorter, Patrick Pentz started in the goal. With Heiko Westermann, Alexandar Borkovic and Ruan three central defenders are still injured, Tarkan Serbest started alongside Abdul Kadiri Mohammed. Christoph Martschinko was given preference over Thomas Salamon. Raphael Holzhauser returned to the team, the game maker started in the defensive midfield. Dominik Prokop was in the starting line-up instead of Jinhyun Lee and as the middle striker Thorsten Fink brought Christoph Monschein.
Peter Zulj was able to play again after an injury, Coach Franco Foda was able to start with the winning eleven from the 3-0 away win.
Austria started the game cautious, Sturm was handling the ball at first. However the “Violets” had the first chance during the game but a free-kick by Raphael Holzhauser from long distance, was parried by Siebenhandl (15'). Holzhauser was the centre of attention again when Potzmann fell down in the penalty area of the “Violets”. Referee Hameter decided on a penalty shot. Martschinko injured his knee in an action and had to be replaced by Thomas Salamon (20'). Deni Alar stepped up for the penalty shot but missed the gaol (21').
However, the Grazer scored shortly after, Alar finished after a pass from Potzmann – 1:0 for the home team (27'). After a corner by Zulu it got even worse when the ball bounced from Kadiri’s shinbone into his own goal - 2:0 (30')
The Viennese found little access to the game, a shot by Felipe Pires went past the goal (41'). On the other side, Kadiri saved a shot from Alar (43'). With a 2-0 residue they went into the cabins.
The second half started with a free-kick from Lykogiannis, but the ball was blocked by Patrick Pentz (49'). A shot by Ismael Tajouri-Shradi could be deflected by Siebenhandl (54'). In minute 56 SK Sturm made the preliminary decision, Philipp Huspek intercepted a pass by Tarkan Serbest in the midfield, serving Deni Alar, who scored over Pentz – 3:0.
Thorsten Fink brought David de Paula for Dominik Prokop for more stability in the midfield, Raphael Holzhauser hit with a magnificent long shot only the bar (68'). Kevin Friesenbichler came into the game for Tajouri-Shradi. The “Violets” were still trying to make the impossible happen, but nothing was going to work on this day. Already during stoppage time, Felipe Pires had to leave the field after a red card. There won’t be much time to ponder for Austria, already on Thursday they have to give it their all against HNK Rijeka in the UEFA Europa League.
