2:3 against Sturm – Austria continues to chase a victory

The “Violets” remain without a victory in the second championship game. Huspek (33'), Zulj (56') and Schmid (86') scored for Sturm Graz, the “Violets” late comeback with an own goal (82') and Holzhauser (88') was not enough.

After the tie against AEL Limassol, several changes in the starting line-up were made: while Jens Stryger Larsen and Ismael Tajouri Shradi had to deal with adductor problems, Thorsten Fink granted Christoph Martschinko a voluntary break. For the trio Thomas Salamon, David de Paula and Christoph Monschein moved into the starting line-up. Next lot of injuries among the players of Sturm Graz, Lykogiannis also had to leave out the game shortly before kickoff.

Deficit despite superiority

Even though FK Austria Wien continued to improve, Sturm had the first great opportunity in the game: after a misplaced pass by Tarkan Serbest the ball reached Thorsten Röcher - his shot from outside the penalty area just past the right pole (6').

After that, the “Violets” found better in the game, Raphael Holzhauser surprised Jörg Siebenhandl with a lifter, but the goalkeeper could deflect the shot. A big chance for Austria shortly after, De Paula stopped and controlled the ball in the penalty area - his shot from the right side was too central and Siebenhandl could arm the ball away (11').

In the middle of this good phase for the “Violets”, Graz scored: Röcher made his way on the left against De Paula, Huspek scored after his cross (33'). In return, Kevin Friesenbichler hit the outside net after a nice attack. FK Austria Wien increased the pressure, they wanted to equalize before the half-time break. A header by Felipe Pires was saved by Röcher (39'). Excitement shortly after, former “Violet” Fabian Koch only saw yellow after a brutal foul on Felipe Pires (42'). The first half ended with more ball possession (63%) and more one on one victories (53%) for Austria, but Graz remained in the lead.

Slap in the face for the “Violets”

The second half began strong for the “Violets”, which found its temporary peak in minute 55, when a header from Felipe Pires could be knocked off only on the line. Shortly after the slap in the face: Huspek makes his way through on the right side, Peter Zulj uses his cross to the 2-0 lead for the guests. In minute 63 a header from Friesenbichler hits the bar.

In the final phase, events are overturning: first, the “Violets” narrowed the gap - after a corner by Holzhauser Zulj scores in his own goal (82'). Shortly after, Osman Hadzikic can’t bring a long ball under control, Schmid scores into the empty goal - 1:3 (86'). But the “Violets” do not give up: Dominik Prokop is fouled in the penalty area - Holzhauser utilized the penalty shot – 2:3 (88'). FK Austria Wien tried everything for the equalizer during the final minutes but it was not enough.
