3-1 against Wiener Sport-Club in the cup

Two penalties - converted by Christoph Monschein and Manprit Sarkaria - and an own goal by Luka Gusic secured Austria Wien’s promotion in the UNIQA ÖFB Cup. Ivan Andrejevic scored for the hosts.

For Austria Wien, Georg Teigl and Johannes Handl reported back during the international break, both were lined-up in the back four by Peter Stöger. Vesel Demaku started in the defensive midfield, otherwise the “Violets” were set up very strong up front with Patrick Wimmer, Manprit Sarkaria, Alexander Grünwald, Benedikt Pichler and Christoph Monschein.

Sport-Club suffered a defeat against Mauerwerk in the Regionalliga Ost, but coach Robert Weinstabl only made one change. Mirza Berkovic replaced Ivan Andrejevic in the midfield.

Monschein scored from the penalty point

With a chance for Benedikt Pichler (9’), Austria Wien started the game well. Due to the extremely deep ground, however, setting up the game was more than difficult. A header by Johannes Handl after a cross from Patrick Wimmer landed in the hands of goalkeeper Florian Prögelhof (33’). Shortly after, Wimmer volleyed after a cross by Manprit Sarkaria, but the ball did not land in the goal after hitting the crossbar, the bar and again the crossbar (36’).

Benedikt Pichler was fouled by Prögelhof in the penalty area in the 38th minute, Christoph Monschein safely converted the penalty-kick – 0-1. There was no shot in the direction of Patrick Pentz from the hosts, Austria Wien went into the break with a well-deserved lead.

An own goal and another penalty secured the promotion

Shortly after the restart, Andrej Todoroski tried to outsmart Patrick Pentz with a corner kick, Patrick Wimmer cleared the ball on the line (50’). An unfortunate own goal gave Austria Wien the second goal. An unintentional back pass from Luka Gusic slipped through Prögelhof’s legs (56’). Christoph Monschein failed on Prögelhof with a shot from an acute angle (63’), a little later he was knocked off his feet by Gusic in the penalty area. This time Sarkaria stepped up, and he also converted confidently – 0-3 in the 73rd minute.

Vesel Demaku had to be replaced with a shoulder injury, Stefan Radulović made his competitive debut for the A-team. Peter Stöger brought Bright Edomwonyi, Christoph Martschinko, Aleksandar Jukić and Max Sax into the game.

Prögelhof fended off a shot by Patrick Wimmer, but the goalie parried Sarkaria's follow-up shot well (80’). Against Edomwonyi, Prögelhof remained the winner as well (90’+1’). In between, Sport-Club scored a consolation goal, a shot by substitute Ivan Andrejevic was deflected, which gave Pentz no chance (89’).

Austria Wien managed an ultimately safe victory in Hernals and is thus in the round of 16 of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup.
