5–0 thrashing in the cup derby

Austria Wien secured a commanding 5–0 win over Wiener Sport-Club in the first round of the 2026/27 UNIQA-ÖFB Cup. Johannes Eggestein scored a hat-trick, whilst Sanel Šaljić and Hasan Deshishku, making his competitive debut, ensured a clear-cut result.

Compared to the first leg of the UEFA Conference League in Q2, Stephan Helm rotated his line-up in several positions for the first round of the cup. With Kang Hee Lee, Manfred Fischer, Sanel Šaljić and Johannes Eggestein, only four players in the starting XI had also started the match in Latvia. As expected, cup specialist Mirko Kos started in goal, with Kang Hee Lee, Aleksandar Dragović and Dejan Radonjić forming the back three. On the wings were World Cup returnee Taeseok Lee and 18-year-old Daniel Nnodim, who was making his debut for the Violets’ first team. Captain Manfred Fischer and Philipp Maybach formed the central midfield. Up front, Stephan Helm fielded Sanel Šaljić, Moritz Wels and Johannes Eggestein.

A perfect start

The Violets got off to a dream start at the new Sport-Club-Platz. Exactly 63 seconds into the game, Daniel Nnodim, on his debut, played a sharp pass to Johannes Eggestein. The striker took the ball past his Hernals opponent and coolly slotted it into the near corner to give his side an early 1–0 lead (2')!

Even after this lightning start, Austria remained the dominant side, moving the ball confidently through their own ranks and controlling the game. The next good chance fell to Philipp Maybach, who won the ball on the edge of the box and narrowly missed the far corner with a delicate outside-of-the-foot shot (13').

In the 22nd minute, there was a set-back for the Violets: following a corner, Sport-Club defenders Kerim Abazović and Aleksandar Dragović collided heads. Austria’s defensive leader had to be substituted after receiving lengthy treatment, with Reinhold Ranftl coming on in his place. Our number 15 was subsequently taken to hospital with a suspected concussion. We’d like to take this opportunity to wish him a speedy and full recovery!

Shortly afterwards, Helm’s side threatened again. Manfred Fischer got a shot away, but WSC goalkeeper Christoph Haas made the save and tipped the ball away (26'). The last notable chance before the break fell to Dornbach: following a free-kick, Abazović found himself unmarked and struck the crossbar (43'). The half-time whistle blew with the Violets holding a narrow but deserved lead.

Eggestein completes his hat-trick

The Veilchen also got off to a perfect start in the second half. Manfred Fischer won the ball in midfield and set up Johannes Eggestein. The opening goalscorer unselfishly laid the ball off to Šaljić, who made it 2–0 with a delicate chip (49')!

Austria kept up the pressure: following a cross from Taeseok Lee, Schutti headed the ball onto his own post; Eggestein converted the rebound to make it 3–0 and celebrated his second goal in front of the 2,000 ‘Veilchen’ fans in the away stand (55’). The match continued in the same vein. Nnodim played a superb through ball to Eggestein, and the striker lobbed the ball beautifully over Haas to make it 4–0 (58').

Austria then controlled the game, before substitute Hasan Deshishku scored the fifth goal on his competitive debut. The 18-year-old stole the ball from Abazović and lobbed Haas with a powerful finish (75').

In the closing stages, Manfred Fischer and his team saw out the match in style and were delighted with a commanding victory and their progression to the next round of the cup.
