80 years later…

On Thursday, on occasion of the memorial year 2018, the team and the supporting staff of Austria Wien visited the memorial for the Austrian Jewish victims of the Schoah in Vienna. 80 years ago, the entire, eight-member Jewish executive board of Austria Wien was lost because of the annexation of Austria.

The year 1938 - on the one hand it stands for the purposeful and systematic beginning of the end of many human destinies.

And on the other hand, it almost meant the end of Austria Wien, whose eight-member board had consisted entirely of people of Jewish faith before they were evicted, imprisoned or murdered. The same fate also met many followers of the ‘Violets’.

On Thursday, the Austria Wien team and the supporting staff visited the memorial at ‘Judenplatz’ in Vienna in order to keep alive the history and the related consciousness while at the same time considering their own roots and their own history.

CEO Markus Kraetschmer: "We are aware of our social responsibility and role model as a football club and want to remember this part of the Austrian history. It now has been 80 years, there are not many contemporary witnesses anymore – which makes it even more important to remember this part of history. Austria Wien strongly opposes any form of racism, discrimination or homophobia. Jewish history is an important part of Austria Wien. That's why it's so important for us that our players know and understand what this part of history means to us and for them to take a few minutes to commemorate it."

Captain Alex Grünwald: "These were moving moments. I think as a ‘Violet’ you should know the history of the club. This is especially important for new players. I think it's good to learn more about that time."
