Austria beat Farul Constanta 5–0 in a convincing win

The Veilchen secured an impressive win in the final of the UWCL qualifying mini-tournament. Austria beat Farul Constanța 5–0, thereby clinching their place in the third qualifying round. From the outset, the Viennese side dominated proceedings and established a clear lead early on. The goals were scored by Verena Hanshaw, Modesta Uka (2), Elisa Pfattner and Yvonne Weilharter.

Just as they had done in the semi-final of the mini-tournament, the Violets got off to a flying start. They were awarded two corners in quick succession as early as the 2nd minute. After Katharina Schiechtl’s first attempt was deflected out of play, a variation on the second corner led to the opening goal: Modesta Uka played the ball to Verena Hanshaw, who struck from distance and slotted the ball into the net to make it 1–0. Just two minutes later, Uka added another herself. The forward made a strong run down the wing, drove towards goal and coolly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to make it 2–0 (4th minute).

The Violets’ defence is looking strong

Austria continued to dominate thereafter. Valentina Pötzl set up Patricia Pfanner, whose shot the Romanian goalkeeper just managed to parry. Further chances followed from Louise Schöffel, Pötzl and Yvonne Weilharter, whilst Farul posed hardly any threat in front of the Violets’ goal. The Violets’ defence stood firm and conceded very little. Shortly before half-time, Schiechtl, Uka and Pfanner all saw their efforts saved. In the 45th minute, a shot from Schöffel finally grazed the crossbar – the teams went into the break with the score at 2–0.

Austria remained the dominant side after the break as well. Pötzl and Schöffel had further attempts on goal before the ball found the back of the Romanian net once more in the 61st minute. Following a foul on Schöffel in the penalty area, the referee pointed to the spot. Uka stepped up and confidently converted the penalty to make it 3–0 (61’).

Just five minutes later, the next goal followed: Pfattner received a lovely pass, took a chance and tried her luck herself – with success. Her shot found the net to make it 4–0. Austria then made several substitutions but remained a constant threat. In the 75th minute, Uka was initially denied by a defender, but Weilharter struck the rebound first-time from distance to score a superb goal, making it 5–0.

Austria kept up the pressure right until the end

In the closing minutes, Farul Constanța tried once more to make an impact going forward, but were unsuccessful from set pieces. At the other end, Andrea Glibo had a chance to score the sixth goal in stoppage time, but sent the ball just wide of the goal (90+1). Shortly afterwards, the Romanians also had their first truly dangerous attempt on goal – but the ball flew over the bar. The score thus remained a clear 5–0 victory, with which the Violets confidently capped off the UWCL qualifying mini-tournament.

The draw for the third qualifying round will take place on Tuesday at 1.00 pm in Nyon. Austria Wien could face any of the following teams: Sparta Prague (CZE), SK Brann (NOR), OH Leuven (BEL) or HB Køge (DEN). The matches will be played on 26 August and 2 September.
