Austria Wien defeats Dinamo Zagreb 2-0

You always meet twice and in soccer you meet even more often. Proof for that was the test game against Dinamo Zagreb during the training camp in Belek today complete with a reunion with many former ‘Violets’ - which was very sincere.

Captain Alex Grünwald chatted with his former coach Nenad Bjelica for a long time, who also talked to CEO Markus Kraetschmer and President Frank Hensel about shared times (the Croatian led us into the Champions League in 2013/14).

Athletics coach Martin Mayer was also excited to see part of the team, such as the assistant coach Rene Poms (both were also with Austria Wien at the time), Emir Dilaver and Marin Leovac played against their former club in Dinamo jerseys as centre-back and left-back.

The Croatian star ensemble, which ended the group stage of the Europa League unbeaten, initially had a little more ball possession, but Austria Wien certainly had better chances over 90 minutes.

Madl (4') and then Edomwonyi (14') had good chances, the Croatian series champion only hit the crossbar just before the half-time break (Olmo). At that point a delegation of Sturm Graz was also present, led by coach Roman Mählich and Sports Director Günter Kreissl.

You could hardly see that Bjelica’s team will start their spring season with the first competitive match in just a week, and that they are already further in their preparation than we are. Although it should also be noted that Dinamo trained with a total of 33 players for the last 16 days in Belek and will fly home on Saturday.

In any case, the second face of the ‘Violets’, which had almost completely changed during the break, was very refreshing. It also included newcomer Sterling Yakete as the second striker, who harmonized well with Alon Turgeman. Yakete as the powerful, Turgeman as the precise attacker.

What emerged due to the ever-increasing superiority, was executed by Sarkaria in minute 81: He calmly scored after assist by Fitz in front of the eyes of the fan clubs ‘Atzgersdorf’ and ‘Südburgenland’. Equally great, the second goal just before the end, as new signing Yateke (picture against Dilaver) used another assist by Fitz – 2-0.

Coach Thomas Letsch: "It was a very good game overall, which we also deserved to win. On the one hand, we did not allow much, and on the other hand, we implemented much of what we set out to do. During the first and second half, everyone has fulfilled their task well. This increases the competition and offers us more options."
