Vesel Demaku replaced the suspended James Jeggo, Christoph Monschein began in place of Bright Edomwonyi - otherwise head coach Robert Ibertsberger counted on the successful team from last weekend.
Oliver Glasner celebrated his farewell game with the runner-up LASK, he changed his line-up on five position compared to the game in St. Pölten. Alexander Schlager started in the goal, Emanuel Pogatetz and Christian Ramsebner in the defence. Stefan Haudum started in the central midfield because James Holland injured his arm during a friendly game against Arsenal on Thursday. Upfront Yusuf Otubanjo was also new in the line-up. Thomas Goiginger was missing due to a yellow card suspension.
LASK started the game with a shot by Samuel Tetteh, which went over the goal (2’). Austria Wien replied with the first shot on goal in the 6th minute and scored right away: Florian Klein brought a cross from the right side to the middle, Christian Ramsebner headed the ball to the middle. Uroš Matić scored with a fantastic volley into the right corner – 0-1.
The start was very successful, and thus Austria Wien was in third place. Sturm also scored the lead against WAC early on. Vesel Demaku conquered the ball, with a pass by Monschein Dominik Prokop came to a finish, Schlager parried the dangerous shot (16’). Ivan Lučić first cleared against Otubanjo, a little later against Tetteh (34’, 37’). Otherwise, the ‘Violets’ had the game well under control, with the deserved lead, the teams went into the half-time break.
The second half began less well than the first, LASK could equalize in the 51st minute. Tetteh took a long pass from Peter Michorl and defeated Lučić. Only a few minutes later, the game was turned: Samuel Tetteh scored his second goal, after a cross by substitute Dominik Frieser the Ghanaians headed the 2-1 for LASK (55’) - suddenly Austria Wien was only on 5th in the standings.
Robert Ibertsberger brought Maximilian Sax for Dominik Prokop, and later Bright Edomwonyi for Cristián Cuevas. LASK was inspired by the two goals. Michael Madl saved against Otubanjo in the last second (57’), Joao Klauss slammed a cross by Frieser on the crossbar (59’).
A little later it was Austria Wien’s turn again: Christoph Monschein defeated goalkeeper Schlager, Ramsebner cleared the ball in front of the line (62’). Shortly after Monschein failed on Schlager after assist by Alexander Grünwald, Michael Madl headed over the goal after a free-kick by Grünwald (67’, 68’).
WAC managed to equalize against Sturm, and thus Austria Wien was in fourth place. LASK scored for the third time, after another assist by Frieser substitute Florian Jamnig scored the 3-1 for the hosts (79’). Alon Turgeman came for Vesel Demaku, Christoph Monschein scored. A cross by Grünwald was warded off by Pogatetz but didn’t go far, Monschein scored volley - 3-2 (85’).
But LASK wasn’t misled and showed why the team finished the championship in second place. After Lučić was able to clear against Frieser in the 88th minute, Joao Victor and Stefan Haudum scored for the final score of 5-2 (89’, 90’+1’). Maximilian Sax saw a red card during stoppage time before referee Sebastian Gishamer ended a turbulent game. WAC won against Sturm, so Austria Wien ended the tipico-Bundesliga 2018/19 in fourth place and thus returns to the international stage.
