The team of Cem Sekerlioglu remained without a loss of points in the TSN-Beton group, defeated FC Schalke 04 2-1 and FC Augsburg 4-2, against the regional representatives FC Grone (10-0) and SVG Göttingen (9-0) they celebrated goal festivals. The amazing audience in Göttingen once more captivated the ‘Violets’.
Great performances of the ‘Violets’
Sunday morning the ‘Violets’ survived the second round with two victories, clearly prevailed against Hannover 96 and Mainz 05. In the quarter-finals, the first strong opponent waited for our rookies, the defending champion Manchester United.
The game between the teams of the 2018 final was for many the early end game in which Aleksandar Jukic & Co rose above the Red Devils. The end result was 5-1, the final goal was scored by the 15-year-old Muharem Huskovic, who was one of the youngest players in the tournament.
In the semi-final, the ‘Violets’ had to accept their 2-4 defeat after a great fight against FV Brügge. After an early lead by Brügge Austria Wien scored a regular goal but it was disallowed. Afterwards the team was a bit distracted, the Belgians moved into the final.
Praise from Manchester United and Brügge
The ‘Violets’ won the game for third place, defeating FC Augsburg 2-1 and thus secured the third place. After securing second place in the previous year, another great placement at the largest U19 indoor tournament in Europe!
At the awards ceremony, Colin Little, Manager of Manchester United, congratulated Austria Wien and said the ‘Violets’ had been "the best team in the entire tournament", "deserving of victory". Similarly, the players from Brügge expressed themselves to the French-speaking ‘Violet’ Armand Smrcka.
The audience in Göttingen praised the ‘Violets’ with applause at the award ceremony, Matteo Meisl thanked everyone for the great atmosphere and once again received great applause.
