Austria Wien welcome Austria Klagenfurt to the Generali Arena on Wednesday at 18:00 in the round of 16 of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup. Coach Michael Wimmer and top scorer Andreas Gruber look ahead to the first Cup evening in Vienna-Favoriten in three years.
In the Bundesliga, the Veilchen managed to make up ground in recent weeks with three wins in a row. The 1-0 win at league leaders Sturm Graz on Sunday gave them additional self-confidence:
"But we are still behind, we are seventh in the table and we still have to make up points. That's why no one is thinking of letting up anywhere. We have to keep winning. The Cup is very important for us, it offers the shortest route to a title. We want to get to the quarter-finals with all our might and go as far as possible in this competition," says coach Michael Wimmer.
Christian Früchtl & Co's goal drought has now lasted 525 minutes, and the Veilchen finished October unbeaten: "Not everything was bad before and not everything is good now. The derby was certainly a key: You saw what passionate defending can achieve. The team does it well collectively, defends resolutely and passionately," explains Wimmer.
Andreas Gruber once again scored the decisive goal for Austria in the 1-0 win in Graz, the 28-year-old leads the Bundesliga scorers' list with eight goals: "The Cup is very important for us, we definitely want to get to the quarter-finals and then we'll see how far we can go. I think we are very well prepared for the opponent. We have good confidence, the team is in a good mood. I'm looking forward to tomorrow," says Gruber.
