1-1 against LASK at the end of the year

Austria Wien took the lead in the 13th minute through Benedikt Pichler, Thomas Goiginger equalized after 22 minutes. Patrick Pentz saved a penalty from Rene Renner in the 97th minute. The “Violets” made one point against LASK.

This time Johannes Handl sat on the bench, Christoph Schösswendter took over his place in central defense. Peter Stöger relied on a 4-1-4-1 system, Georg Teigl took a more offensive position on the wing. Stephan Zwierschitz started on the right in the back four. Thomas Ebner started in the defensive midfield, Dominik Fitz returned to the team after his suspension.

During the week LASK won the UNIQA ÖFB Cup round of 16 against ASK Elektra, coach Dominik Thalhammer made two changes compared to the championship defeat against Red Bull Salzburg: Mads Emil Madsen replaced the groggy James Holland, Dominik Reiter started instead of Andreas Gruber.

Pichler scored the lead for Austria Wien, Goiginger equalized

LASK had more of the game in the beginning, but Austria Wien took the lead. Georg Teigl initiated a counterattack, the ball came back to him via Dominik Fitz. Benedikt Pichler finished skillfully after a back-heel against Madsen (13’). The goal scorer himself prevented a quick equalizer a little later when he blocked a shot by Thomas Goiginger on the line (15’). But after 22 minutes it happened after all, Goiginger was a lucky to get the ball in the penalty area and he left Patrick Pentz no chance – 1-1.

Patrick Wimmer suddenly appeared in front of Alexander Schlager, but his finish was blocked (23’). Austria Wien was able to keep LASK - who would take the table lead with a win - away from the goal. In the offensive, they had good scenes, but no clear chances. With the 1-1 the halftime break started.

Big fight, red card, penalty - but no more goals

There were no changes during the break, but Patrick Wimmer had to be replaced by Manprit Sarkaria in the 56th minute. Wimmer was hit in the face by a ball from close range and left the field visibly dazed. LASK was able to record two finishes by Reinhold Ranftl and Rene Renner, but both missed the goal (58’, 60’). Dominik Fitz used Manprit Sarkaria ideally, but his shot went just wide (63’).

Johannes Handl replaced Christoph Schösswendter, who made a good debut in the starting lineup. Then Patrick Pentz was in top form again, as he had been for weeks, our goalkeeper saved shots from Thomas Goiginger and Dominik Reiter as well as a header from Philipp Wiesinger within a few minutes (76’, 80’, 81’). Georg Teigl, on the other hand, almost made the 2-1, but missed after a counterattack with Dominik Fitz (83’).

For the final minutes, Alexander Grünwald and Niels Hahn came into the game for Aleksandar Jukić and Dominik Fitz. Grünwald saw yellow-red after a foul on Gernot Trauner, referee Christian-Petru Ciochirca pointed to the penalty spot in the 96th minute - memories of the previous week were awakened. Rene Renner shot the penalty kick, but Patrick Pentz won and fended off the ball. Austria Wien made one point against LASK in the last game of the year.
