Austria Wien eliminated in the cup quarter final against Salzburg

Due to goals before the break and at the end of the game, Austria Wien lost 2-0 against Red Bull Salzburg in the UNIQA ÖFB Cup quarter-finals. Sekou Koita (40’) and Karim Adeyemi (89’) scored for the hosts. On Wednesday Austria Wien gets a chance to take revenge in the Bundesliga.

Eric Martel was back in the starting line-up. Stephan Zwierschitz started at his side in defensive midfield instead of Thomas Ebner. Georg Teigl started on the right in the back four. In the offensive, Peter Stöger relied on Aleksandar Jukić, who replaced Dominik Fitz. Patrick Wimmer started on the right in the midfield.

Red Bull Salzburg celebrated three victories without getting any goals in 2021, coach Jesse Marsch relied on his strongest team against Austria Wien. Compared to the 3-0 win in Hartberg, Zlatko Junuzovic moved into the starting line-up instead of Antoine Bernede.

Koita scores for Salzburg

A finish by Patson Daka was deflected to the corner (3’). Benedikt Pichler narrowly missed a sharp cross from Georg Teigl (5’). On the other side, Christoph Schösswendter prevented a cross by Rasmus Kristensen. The Dane just missed a header after the next corner (19’). Aleksandar Jukić had to be replaced by Dominik Fitz in the 23rd minute.

RB Salzburg took the lead just before the break, a deflected shot by Sekou Koita landed in the goal. Patrick Pentz didn’t have a chance during his 100th competitive game for Austria Wien (40’). A cross by Pichler reached Manprit Sarkaria, but his finish was too weak (43’). Markus Suttner was able to continue for the time being after an injury during stoppage time but had to be replaced by Johannes Handl during the break.

Stephan Zwierschitz took over the full-back position from Markus Suttner, Johannes Handl played in the midfield. A volley cross from Kristensen fell dangerously towards the long corner - Patrick Pentz was on the spot (50’). A finish by Enock Mwepu just missed the goal (53’). Patrick Wimmer tried a long shot, but it was blocked and no problem for Salzburg’s goalkeeper Cican Stankovic (60’).

Austria Wien left the ball to Salzburg despite the deficit, waiting for quick counter attacks, which the hosts prevented. Patrick Wimmer missed a pass from Erik Palmer-Brown by just centimeters (74’). Agim Zeka made his debut for the “Violets” in the final phase. Dominik Fitz had a chance during a counterattack, but his shot missed the goal (86’). A free kick by the youngster landed in the hands of Stankovic (88’).

Red Bull Salzburg decided the game in the 89th minute, with substitute Karim Adeyemi scoring the 2-0. Benedikt Pichler and Brenden Russell Aaronson had the last chances of the game during stoppage time, Austria Wien unfortunately had to say goodbye in the quarter-finals of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup.
