After the very exciting European Cup Thursday, it was back to Bundesliga routine. Coach Michael Wimmer made four changes, some of them due to injury. In defence, Matteo Meisl started in place of Marvin Martins, who served the last game of his suspension. Lucas Galvão was able to join in and moved into the defensive centre. Hakim Guenouche made his starting debut on the left wing. Manfred Fischer replaced the injured James Holland, the attacking trio was formed by Andreas Gruber, Dominik Fitz as well as Aleksandar Jukić.
WAC coach Manfred Schmid received a warm welcome at the Generali-Arena, the violet veteran switched to a three-man backline after the 1-1 at Austria Lustenau. Simon Piesinger was the additional centre-back, in attack Bernhard Zimmermann replaced Thomas Sabitzer.
The opening phase of the match was characterised by a rather cautious feeling-out of the two teams. Augustine Boakye's first shot missed the goal (8th), Hakim Guenouche's and Matthias Braunöder's shots went well over (9th, 12th). Thierno Ballo also missed his target (14th). It became dangerous when Reinhold Ranftl took a Stanglpass well to the middle. The Carinthians were able to save a corner from Andi Gruber, who was ready to shoot (16th). On the other side, Christian Früchtl parried a shot by Ervin Omic from close range (20th).
In very hot conditions, Lucas Galvão put a header after a Fitz corner next to the goal, a finish by Aleksandar Jukić was saved by Hendrik Bonmann in the Wolfsberg goal (33rd, 34th). The Veilchen's biggest chance came in the 37th minute, Dominik Baumgartner saved a shot by Dominik Fitz on the line, Jukić put the follow-up shot over. The game went into the half-time break goalless.
Muharem Husković came on for Dominik Fitz in the second half. Simon Piesinger greeted our number nine with a hug and saw yellow for it. From the ensuing free-kick, Johannes Handl finished but missed (48th). Earlier, Guenouche missed a header after a cross from Ranftl (46th). After an hour Manuel Polster replaced Hakim Guenouche, Silva came on for Gruber.
Nikolas Veratschnig shot over from an acute angle (65th). A similar situation on the other side, but Polster's shot was slightly deflected. Fischer had a chance from the subsequent corner, but Bonmann thwarted it (72nd).
Alexander Schmidt and Matan Baltaxa replaced Aleksandar Jukić and Johannes Handl in the final phase. From a free-kick - already in injury time - Muki Husković finished twice, Bonmann remained the winner twice. On the counterattack, the Veilchen were lucky, Adis Jasic slammed the ball against the crossbar. A header by Thomas Sabitzer went just wide of the second post (90th+3). The match against WAC ended 0-0.
