Austria Wien draws 2-2 in test against AS Monaco

In the penultimate test match of the summer, Austria Wien drew 2-2 with AS Monaco. Aleksandar Jukić gave the Violets an early lead, after conceding two cheap goals, Andreas Gruber equalized. Monaco missed a penalty, Austria hit the bar twice.

The Violets started the match well at the C.F. Esperança de Lagos stadium and caught the Monegasques on the wrong foot. Aleksandar Jukić moved inside from the left wing and beat goalkeeper Alexander Nübel (6th).

However, Monaco struck back quickly and turned the game around within minutes. Maripán equalized after a corner (14th), Gelson Martins scored after a throw-in (16th).

Manfred Schmid's team, however, did not let itself be put off by this, remained well in the game and continued to find opportunities. After a long ball from Matthias Braunöder, Jukić crossed to the center of the penalty area, from where Andreas Gruber finely circled the ball into the far corner (27th).

The 2-2 was also the score at the break, not least because goalkeeper Christian Früchtl prevented Monaco from taking the lead again with a fantastic foot save. In addition, Volland only hit the bar from the penalty spot.

Dario Kreiker replaced Marvin Martins on the left of the back four for the second half, and Monaco did not make any substitutions until after an hour, but did replace the entire team. In summery conditions, the Violets not only continued to hold their own, but were also closer to taking the lead for the time being.

First Husković hit the bar, then Braunöder a few minutes later, before the game died down a bit. In the end, it was again Monaco who had more of the game, but Früchtl rarely had to intervene and was always on the spot.

Manfred Schmid: "It was a really good performance by my team today. We had good possession, defended well, conceded very little and created some good chances on the other side, including two shots off the bar. Unfortunately, we slept a bit in standard situations and conceded some annoying goals. Basically, though, it was a very good test for us."
