Preview of the last game of the year

Austria Vienna visit Austria Klagenfurt on Saturday (5 p.m.) for the final match of 2023. It's a very important match for the Violets in terms of making it into the Championship Group, but coach Michael Wimmer doesn't want to call it a final.

"We're expecting a game where our opponents know what the situation in the table is like. They now have a five-point lead and their motto will be to take this advantage into the winter break. Conversely, we naturally want to stay in contention. I don't see it as the final game for the Championship Group, because there are still five games to go before the division. But of course we know how important this last game is this year", said Wimmer after training on Friday.

Power, pace & coolness

In the first two encounters this season, they drew 2-2 in the league at the beginning of September and 1-0 wien in the cup at the beginning of November, both at home. The Violets are unbeaten away from home against Austria Klagenfurt, with one win and three draws in their first four matches.

The aim is to extend this run, ideally with another three points. "We have to bring our energy onto the pitch right from the start, need power and have to attack well. Klagenfurt do that really well, especially in possession, but also have a good compactness without the ball and we have to exploit the situations in which they are unsettled with pace", says Wimmer.

"But it's also important", said the coach, "that we build on the performances of recent weeks, especially when I think about the defense. We have to be very stable at the back again, that's extremely important. And up front, when we create chances, we simply have to be more ruthless and score the goals."

Personnel situation

It is not yet clear who will be able to make the trip to Carinthia on Friday. "Marvin Martins is slightly injured but trained again today, as did Alexander Schmidt, so we'll have to wait and see. Dominik Fitz has unfortunately been out since Tuesday with a rib contusion, so I don't think he'll be fit for Saturday." Lucas Galvão is available again after his suspension.
