Prokop: “The game against Mattersburg is just as important as the Derby”

The team is fully focused before the last Bundesliga games of the year on Sunday (2:30 PM) against SV Mattersburg and the Derby on December 16th (5 PM) in the Generali-Arena. "These games are very important for us, they can be decisive in which direction we will go next year," says Dominik Prokop.

He promises on behalf of all players that they will approach the games with one hundred percent and full vigour. The names of the opponents do not matter. "The game against Mattersburg is just as important as the derby and we want to regain our self-confidence," says Prokop.

Our ‘Violets’ have recently picked up the maximum of six points from two matches, while Mattersburg have not won in five rounds. Nevertheless, the 21-year-old warns against the team from Burgenland: "In the league, everyone is dangerous, we can’t underestimate anyone. We are still the favourites, Austria Wien is almost always the favourite in Austria," says our U21 team player confidently.

The statistics don’t change anything about that, which shows Austria Wien’s last victory against Mattersburg over a year ago (3-1, August 20th 2017). "We don’t think about that at all – it’s in the past. What counts is the game on Sunday, the success and the points," explains the Viennese.

Offensive spirit about his line-up comeback

He tried to train hard before the second Sunday in advent, to show that he belongs in the team. Just as he had done before the home game against St. Pölten. "During the international cap break I worked hard for two weeks to be back in the starting line-up," recalls Prokop.

He did a great job during his return to the starting line-up (his last game before that was the 0-0 in Innsbruck on October 27th). Together with Michael Madl, who also started again after his injury, Prokop was praised by Thomas Letsch: "With both of them we had two men who did a lot for the game," said the violet head coach.

Prokop admits that this feels good to hear and adds: "However, the victory for the team is the important part." He contributed a lot of creativity, four shots on goal and the assist for the 1-0 by Uros Matic to the victory - his first assist of the season.

"I think I showed my strengths during the game. Of course, there are many things that I could do even better, but it was a step in the right direction," says Prokop summing up his performance against the SKN.

Different standard situations are being rehearsed diligently during training

Florian Klein scored the 2-0 against St. Pölten - and you could say the assistant coaches Roman Stary and Max Senft had "prepared" it. The duo is responsible for the offensive standard situations and Robert Ibertsberger for the defensive standards situations.

Right-back Klein utilized a header by Bright Edomwonyi. Prokop is usually in the penalty area during a dead ball situation. "We had versions where I would be involved, but the opponent defended well," he says.

His task was to work the ball in the back and also play forward, like he showed during the trainings. "Standard situations are very important because you can make the difference in a tight match, you can’t always play out many chances," says Prokop. Wide shots and standard situations were practiced more during training and it paid off. Against Admira (2-1) and St. Pölten three goals have been scored from standard situations and one by a wide shot.
