Viennese derby ended with a 1-1 draw

Austria remains unbeaten at the Allianz Stadion and the third Viennese derby of the season ended 1-1. The hosts took the lead through Robert Ljubičić, Marco Djuričin equalized before the break. Austria had a slight chance plus, but the winning goal would not come. The Violets took a point from Hütteldorf.

Manfred Schmid was not at the game due to corona, co-coach Cem Sekerlioglu and Mark McCormick represented the head coach as in the 22nd round against Admira. Austria's starting eleven changed in two positions: Lukas Mühl returned in central defense in place of Johannes Handl, while Manfred Fischer was match fit again in midfield. Muharem Husković took a seat on the bench alongside the fit-again Aleksandar Jukić and Romeo Vucic.

Rapid coach Ferdinand Feldhofer saw no reason for a change after the 3-1 win in Klagenfurt.

Marco Djuričin equalized early lead of the hosts

The 335th Viennese derby began in a combative and intense manner. The hosts' first chance - a dangerous cross from Bernhard Zimmermann - was saved by Lukas Mühl (3rd). After a long pass from Markus Suttner, Marco Djuričin appeared in front of Rapid goalkeeper Niklas Hedl, but was just offside (10.). Shortly after, Marvin Martins tried a low shot after Can Keles' pass, but Hedl was on the spot (12.). After a ball loss in Austria's build-up, Zimmermann failed to beat Patrick Pentz before Robert Ljubičić converted the rebound to make it 1-0 for the hosts (14.).

Lucas Galvão and Patrick Pentz together prevented Zimmermann from conceding a quick second goal, Rapid kept putting Austria under pressure with good attacking pressing in this phase. Ferdy Druijf missed a chance after an assist from Yusuf Demir, and shortly afterwards Pentz saved a cross from Ljubičić that was deflected dangerously by Lukas Mühl (28th). Eric Martel intercepted a pass from Dejan Petrovič, then things moved quickly in the direction of the Rapid goal: Manfred Fischer set up Matthias Braunöder, whose sensitive cross only had to be pushed over the line by Marco Djuričin - 1:1, already the eighth goal of the season of the purple top striker (28.).

After that, Austria had better control of the game. A shot by Keles went over, a header by Galvão after a corner kick by Suttner unfortunately also (33rd, 39th). After a cross from Fischer, Keles placed a header too inaccurately, Hedl was able to parry (41.). Alexander Grünwald also had a good opportunity before the break after Martins' cross, but the ball also went over the crossbar (45.+1). An entertaining game went into halftime with a score of 1:1.

Second half with less risk of both teams

After the change of ends, the 26,000 spectators in the Vienna derby were treated to a different game. Austria adapted better to the aggressive pressing of the hosts and was able to increase possession significantly. A first shot by Markus Suttner went over the goal from an acute angle (50th). After an hour, Aleksandar Jukić came on in place of Can Keles. Zimmermann also missed the goal with a shot on Rapids' side, Marvin Martins blocked a finish from Druijf (64th, 66th). Patrick Pentz made a brilliant save on a Zimmermann opportunity, but the chance was preceded by a foul (72nd).

A quarter of an hour before the end, Muharem Husković replaced Alexander Grünwald. A header by Djuričin after a corner by Suttner went into the arms of Hedl, after which it was also over for the striker (84.). Noah Ohio came on for the final minutes. Eric Martel took another corner kick from Suttner - missed (88th). Ohio completed a counter-attack via Jukić and Husković, but failed to beat Hedl (89th). In the 94th minute, Manfred Fischer had the match ball for Violett, but his shot went just wide of the far corner. The Vienna derby ended in a draw for the sixth time in a row.
