The first of three matches in the Tipsport Malta Cup against Czech first division side FC Hradec Králové ended 0-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
The other two games will be against Spartak Trnava (Saturday, 13 January, 11:00) and Sigma Olomouc (Monday, 15 January, 16:00). Thanks to the invitation to the Tipsport Malta Cup, Austria saved a large part of the costs for the training camp, thanks also go to the agency QMedia and Malta Tourism "Visit Malta".
On Wednesday morning, the Violets completed another training session before all fit squad players were given minutes of action as planned in the first test match of the winter preparations in the afternoon. Muki Huskovic, Manuel Polster & Moritz Wels, who are all in the army duty, only joined the team in the evening after the test match. Dominik Fitz stayed at the team hotel due to illness. Goalkeeper Lukas Wedl, Hakim Guenouche and Silva played through, Tin Plavotic celebrated his comeback after a five-month injury break from the 60th minute onwards, otherwise coach Michael Wimmer made a complete substitution at the break.
They saw a first half with few chances for a long time, in which the Violets created two top chances shortly before the break. Firstly, Silva shot just over from a promising position after preparatory work from Luca Pazourek and Alex Schmidt (45'). A little later, Andi Gruber ran alone towards the opposing goal after a strong pass from Schmidt, but failed to beat keeper Zadrazil (45+1). Hradec Kralove had previously had the first notable opportunity of the game through a long-range shot from Matej Koubek (41').
Centre-back Dejan Radonjic (18) made his debut for Austria in the second half. Vucic made his presence felt after just five minutes with a good shot (50'). An attack via Marvin Potzmann, Silva and Hakim Guenouche was only just cleared (66'). Reinhold Ranftl shot narrowly wide from half-right (85'). Hradec Kralove were unlucky with two headers on the crossbar in the closing stages.
