For the Bundesliga start coach Thomas Letsch started with the successful line-up from the game against Austria XIII. With a 4-3-1-2 system, which was practiced during preparation and four new acquisitions, they faced the newcomer from Tirol.
Karl Daxbacher, successful in the Cup against SC Wiener Linien, changed his starting eleven on three positions. Christoph Freitag, Daniele Gabriele and Martin Harrer were replaced by Matthias Maak, Roman Kerschbaum and Ilkay Durmus in the midfield.
After an impressive choreography on the East Stand, Austria Wien started the season very aggressively. Alon Turgeman appeared eight minutes into the game in front of Innsbruck's goalie Christopher Knett, but was cut short because of a narrow offside position. A free kick by Alexander Grünwald went past friend and foe (13'). However, the first shot on goal came from the guests but Patrick Penz was attentive against Stefan Rakowitz (15'). A cross by Rakowitz was unluckily deflected by Thomas Ebner right towards Zlatko Dedic, Pentz had no chance - 0-1 (19').
Austria Wien didn't lose their cool after the goal, Kevin Friesenbichler served Dominik Prokop, who shot from the edge of the penalty area. The ball went from Knett onto the crossbar, then next to the goal - brilliant save (22'). A long free kick by Prokop barely missed the goal (30'). In the 38th minute it was finally time, the fans in the Generali-Arena were able to celebrate the first violet goal: Uros Matic assisted Alexander Grünwald, who moved towards the middle and scored with left into the short corner - 1-1.
The 'Violets' continued to put on pressure, Knett saved in a duel against Kevin Friesenbichler (42'). Shortly after the striker assisted Prokop, who wasn't able to shot on goal (42'). A game worth seeing went into the halftime break with a 1-1.
The second half began with a free kick by Alex Grünwald, Alon Turgeman didn't bring the header dangerously enough towards the goal (50'). The combination worked much better two minutes later: Again ideally served by Grünwald, the Israeli past Baumgartner and scored the lead - the Generali-Arena and the game were turned upside down (52').
Thomas Salamon assisted Turgeman, Innsbruck's defense prevented another goal with combined forces (59'). Wacker Innsbruck tried a shot from an acute angle, but Pentz saved against Albert Vallci (60'). Kevin Friesenbichler made room for Bright Edomwonyi after a sacrificing performance and 22 duels (top score of all players) (62'). A splendid combination over Prokop and Turgeman landed with Edomwonyi, the Nigerian failed on Knett with his first ball contact. The follow up shot by Turgeman was saved on the line by Meusburger (65').
The game was over for Turgeman in the 70th minute, Venuto replaced him. The Brazilian started into the game with a solo but missed the goal (77'). A finish by Venuto was blocked by Maak, Edomwonyi hit the bar with his follow up shot (86'). Uros Matic also hit metal from the penalty spot following a foul on Venuto, Venuto's subsequent goal was dismissed for offside (88'). Innsbruck goalkeeper Knett injured himself just before stoppage time, defensive player Baumgartner had to protect the goal for him - the guests had already exchanged three players. Letsch also pulled out his last option with Vesel Demaku for Prokop.
Wacker Innsbruck didn't have any more chances to equalize, Austria Wien survived the hectic final phase and secured important three points at the season kick off!
