Austria Wien started with a 4-3-3 system against the city rivals, Igor replaced Cristian Cuevas. Thomas Ebner, Uros Matic and Captain Alexander Grünwald started in the midfield. Kevin Friesenbichler, Bright Edomwonyi and Venuto formed the offense.
SK Rapid coach Goran Djuricin made two changes after the 1-1 against Sturm Graz: Mateo Barac began in the central defence instead of Maximilian Hofmann, Andrei Ivan replaced the slightly injured Veton Berisha on the left wing.
The 327th Wiener Derby started strong, already during the second minute SK Rapid had a great chance but Patrick Pentz prevented worse after a cross by Deni Alar. When Ivan appeared in front of Pentz alone, our keeper was on the spot as well (4'). Afterwards it was the ‘Violets’ turn: Alexander Grünwald sent Kevin Friesenbichler towards the goal, the striker barely missed the short corner (6'). A few minutes later, Friesenbichler tried a shot from a distance after another assist by Grünwald, this time Richard Strebinger was able to save in Rapid’s goal (14'). Igor had room on the left all the way to the penalty area, but his finished missed the long corner (15') - the first fifteen minutes had a lot to offer.
Alar put a header over the goal after a cross by Thomas Murg (23'). Pentz remained the winner through a great save with his foot, in a duel against Ivan as well as after a header by Marvin Potzmann (31', 36'). In between Mert Mülldür held Alexander Grünwald back on the penalty line, and saw yellow from referee Julian Weinberger. The free kick went into the wall (32'). A wide pass by Florian Klein went over the goal as well as a finish by Alar (40', 44') – an exciting first half ended 0-0, with seven shots on goal on both sides.
The second half also got off to a flying start, a finish by Venuto after a pass by Edomwonyi was saved by Mario Sonnleitner with a tackle (47'). A dangerous shot by Murg was deflected to the corner by Christian Schoissengeyr (51') - then it was the ‘Violets’ turn again: Venuto failed from an acute angle on Strebinger (54'). Only a few seconds later, Rapid’s keeper prevented the violet lead when he fended of a finish by Grünwald (after a cross by Uros Matic) from a short distance (55'). Shortly after the time has come, Austria Wien went into the lead: Rapid’s back team couldn’t get the ball away far enough after a corner-kick by Matic, Alexander Grünwald scored with a great shot from the penalty area to the meanwhile deserved lead (57').
Patrick Pentz had little work with shots from Murg and Ljubicic (60', 68'), Austria Wien remained dangerous during counter attacks. Florian Klein fought his way through on the right, his cross missed Bright Edomwonyi (72'). Grünwald missed after a strong solo (76'). Klein prevented a great chance for substitute Berisha on the other side (78'), a volley by Stefan Schwab went far over the goal (80').
Coach Thomas Letsch started exchanging in the closing stages: Vesel Demaku replaced the sacrificing Kevin Fiesenbichler, Ewandro celebrated his tipico-Bundesliga debut - the Brazilian came for Venuto. Christoph Monschein for Bright Edomwonyi was exchange number three minutes before the end of the game.
Rapid didn’t have anymore significant chances, Christoph Monschein missed a great chance in the 96th minute. But no one needed to be angry on the violet side, Austria Wien won 1-0 in Hütteldorf and moved further away from the city rivals in the standings.
