3-0 win in the derby – Vienna is Violet!

Austria Wien picked up their first three points of the season in the Vienna derby. In the first round of the new Bundesliga season, Stefan Kenesei's team came out on top with goals from Dominique Bruinenberg, Verena Volkmer and Carina Wenninger to secure a 3-0 win at First Vienna.

Coach Stefan Kenesei introduced two 16-year-old Bundesliga debutants, new signing Katharina Moser and home-grown player Emily Schäfer, from the start. Lena Triendl had to miss out due to injury, while Katharina Schiechtl returned to the Violets' squad after being unable to play a test match in preparation.

Early lead for the Violets

Austria started the game with a strong presence and began to work their way towards the blue and yellow goal from the outset. This was to be rewarded within the first few minutes of play: After Vienna lost the ball just outside the box, Dominique Bruinenberg got to the ball after a good effort by Verena Volkmer and was able to shoot it straight into the opponent's goal (7')!

However, the following minutes were rather hectic. Despite the early lead, Stefan Kenesei's team lacked composure and repeatedly lost possession. However, Austria stood well at the back and Vienna only had a very limited number of clear-cut chances to score.

After the first half hour, the blue and yellows did manage to create two dangerous chances near the violet goal: After a corner, goalkeeper Larissa Haidner was able to fend off the ball, but the follow-up shot flew over instead of into the goal (32'). Less than five minutes later, the ball came dangerously close to the Austria goal again, but the Violets' defense was able to quickly clear the situation (36'). Shortly before the break, goalscorer Bruinenberg set up Volkmer perfectly, but the captain's well-struck shot was saved by the hosts' goalkeeper (42').

Austria defense stands firm

Vienna started the game with more stability after the break, but the Austria defense was able to keep all attacks under control. Nevertheless, the home side managed their most dangerous action in this phase, but Höcherl's shot just missed the goal (73').

The second goal for Austria came in the 78th minute: Louise Schöffel crossed the ball ideally from half-field to Volkmer, who headed home to make it 2-0. Just a few minutes later, Carina Wenninger took a powerful shot and the ball found its way into the goal via woodwork (81'). The Violets' new signing scored the final goal in the Vienna derby!

Head coach Stefan Kenesei also thought it was a perfect start: “Winning 3-0 at the Hohe Warte makes me very proud and happy. It was a great fight, because Vienna is a very tough opponent. At the end of the day, the result is perhaps even clearer than the game actually was. But we're happy to take it and are over the moon today.”
