A liking for big games - a sense of his privilege

In the last four games of the championship group, Austria Wien had their big goal in mind. Christoph Monschein knows the feeling to score for the ‘Violets’ against RB Salzburg and in the UEFA Europa League. The 26-year-old striker describes his unique path that has made him what he is today.

With four rounds to go, Austria Wien is tied with Sturm Graz (ranked in front because of an extra half point after the basic round) and SKN St. Pölten (better goal difference) and ranked in fifth place. The third place is still the big goal, on WAC we are missing four points. "We still play against all the teams that are ahead of us and have it in our own hands to get twelve points - everything is possible. We need to be more consistent in front of the goal and use our chances," said Christoph Monschein, who passionately cheered the decisive 2-1 of Alon Turgeman during stoppage time:

Salzburg specialist with profoundness

"The last-minute win against St. Pölten was exactly what we needed. In the last few weeks, we gave everything and now we were finally rewarded. That gives us a lot of self-confidence." RB Salzburg suits the playing style of our number 14, "I like to play against Salzburg. I'm a fast player and like to go deep. It suits me extremely well, if the opponent stands up front and attacks. We will have our chances against Salzburg and want to use them," emphasizes Monschein, who was involved in four goals in nine games against Salzburg so far.

The still realistic chance of the European Cup inspires Monschein particularly, the striker has a thing for big games. The 26-year-old still remembers the last UEFA Europa League group stage, as he scored once against AC Milan, AEK Athens and HNK Rijeka. "I was already able to experience how awesome it is to play for Austria Wien against teams like AC Milan. I’ll do everything to get back there."

"I really appreciate our privileges"

A few years ago, the big football stage for Monschein was still a dream, as he only took his chance to become a professional footballer in January 2016 at the age of 23 going to Admira. Until then, Monschein had a resume, which can probably be described as "classical".

After graduating from HTL with a focus on telecommunications, he studied business administration at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration for two and a half years. He also worked in bookkeeping and personnel management, "I used to play football three to four times a week at Brunn and Ebreichsdorf. I also associate this time with a lot of fun," says Monschein, who views his role as an Austria Wien professional differently due to this experience, "I therefore particularly appreciate the privileges of a professional football player. What I can experience with Austria Wien is worth so much to me. I'm happy and proud to be here."

Learning Spanish with VIOLAFIT

Until summer 2014 Christoph Monschein played for his youth club SC Brunn in the “Zweite Landesliga” (fifth highest league), then he moved up to Ebreichsdorf (national and regional league). The quick striker scored his goals everywhere. "The dream of becoming a professional footballer was always there. I always gave everything and played football with joy. A lot came my way on this journey," says Christoph Monschein, who has always remained true to himself.

"I have always only changed clubs when it felt right, when I knew I could be myself one hundred percent and feel good." Clearly this is the case at Austria Wien. Between trainings, the 26-year-old uses the educational offer of VIOLAFIT, learns Spanish together with teammate Dominik Prokop and some Austria Wien employees at the Generali Arena.
