Stephan Helm made just one change in his first Vienna derby as head coach compared to the 1-1 draw in Altach three weeks ago. Hakim Guenouche replaced Matteo Pérez Vinlöf on the left side of defence. Marko Raguž was in the squad for the first time.

Rapid drew 1-1 at WAC the previous week and coach Robert Klauß only made one change to his starting XI. Guido Burgstaller was fit in time and started up front in place of Nikolaus Wurmbrand.

Rapid took the lead, Andi Gruber equalised

Samuel Şahin-Radlinger saved Austria from going behind after just a few seconds, with the Austria goalkeeper coming out on top against Guido Burgstaller (1st). Austria nevertheless got off to a good start, with Maurice Malone's first shot after a solo run by Abubakr Barry going wide of the goal (9'). Şahin-Radlinger parried another shot from Burgstaller (16), but the ball was in the Austria goal shortly afterwards. Dion Beljo was surprised by a cross from Jonas Auer and the ball rolled off his forehead into the far corner - 1-0 for Rapid (23').

The Violets countered with a header from Andreas Gruber that landed on the crossbar and a shot from Manfred Fischer that narrowly missed the target (25, 27). Nenad Cvetković was able to clear a good cross from Malone in front of Gruber at the last moment (34'). A cross from Reinhold Ranftl reached Malone, whose header went over (41'). In the 45th minute, the Violets used their strongest phase to equalise - Andreas Gruber volleyed home a cross from Maurice Malone to make it 1-1, which was also the score at half-time.

The second half went to the hosts

Aleksandar Dragović was forced off with a thigh injury at the start of the second half, with Philipp Wiesinger coming on for the 100-time team player. Dominik Fitz had a good shooting chance after an assist from Malone, but it was blocked (53'). The hosts took the lead again in the 60th minute. Matthias Seidl got to the ball on the edge of the penalty area and shot into the far corner, Şahin-Radlinger had no chance to defend.

Nik Prelec had a headed opportunity in the 68th minute, injured his lower leg and was replaced by Muharem Husković. Matteo Pérez Vinlöf also came on for Hakim Guenouche. Maurice Malone had the chance to equalise after a cross from Andreas Gruber, but shot over the goal (72'). On the counter-attack, Lucas Galvão prevented worse against Mamadou Sangare and substitute Nikolaus Wurmbrand (73‘, 75’). Şahin-Radlinger was on hand to save a header from Cvetković and a near-goal from Pérez Vinlöf (75‘, 76’).

A long period of suffering came to an end in the 82nd minute when Marko Raguž made his debut for the Violet professional team. Moritz Wels also came into the game, Manfred Fischer and Abubakr Barry left the pitch. Şahin-Radlinger prevented Beljo from making it 3:1 in the 95th minute, but Austria were unable to add to their lead and were beaten 2-1.
