Felipe Pires was back after his suspension in the championship, Ismael Tajouri-Shradi took a seat on the bench. Christoph Monschein began as the single-striker, Kevin Friesenbichler and Abdul Kadiri Mohammed were injured and could not play.
Rapid coach Goran Djuricin made five changes compared to Sunday: Tobias Knoflach started in the goal, Maximilian Hofmann replaced the suspended Galvao. Thanos Petsos started in the defensive midfield, Veton Berisha and Joelinton in the offense.
More than 14,000 spectators in the Ernst Happel Stadium saw a similar beginning as on Sunday, both teams absorbed for the most part. A hand-play by Stefan Schwab in the penalty area after a free-kick by Raphael Holzhauser was again unpunished (7'), Heiko Westermann blocked a first minor scoring opportunity by Thomas Murg (9'). Monschein was on the spot when Knoflach made a mistake, but a foul by our striker prevented the early lead of the “Violets” (17'). FK Austria Wien was able to put pressure on the city rivals again and again, the possession of the ball was clearly in favor of the “Violets”.
A dribbling by Petsos ended with a finish next to the goal (28'). After a free-kick by Raphael Holzhauser Knoflach defended a good header from Heiko Westermann - bad luck for the “Violets” (37'). Sonnleitner headed over the goal after a free-kick by Schobesberger, in return Monschein failed with a lift on Knoflach. From the following counter over Schobesberger and assist by Schwab, Murg scored - 1-0 for the guests (41'). Before the halftime break, Austria only got one more corner.
Austria came out explosively from the dressing room, tried to put pressure on Rapid immediately. Jinhyun Lee served Dominik Prokop, whose shot was blocked. The follow-up shot by Thomas Salamon went over the goal (48'). Another cross from Lee reached Ibrahim Alhassan Abdullahi - his header was deflected to a corner (50'). A great cross by Tarkan Serbest after the corner, Alhassan headed powerful (51') – 1:1. The Nigerian soaked up self-confidence, a shot from a distance went over the goal (55').
FK Austria Wien was now clearly game-defining, Holzhauser tried a free-kick, but missed the goal (63'). Another chance for Alhassan after assist by Prokop (63'). Again, a hand play in the penalty area - this time by Auer – was not punished by referee Lechner (64').
Rapid did not show much after the break, however they were in the lead again through a free-kick by Philipp Schobesberger (78'). A shot by Thomas Salamon as well as a solo by Dominik Prokop were deflected to corners (85t', 87').
The “Violets” threw everything forward, Thorsten Fink brought Ismael-Tajouri-Shradi, Marco Stark and Manprit Sarkaria for the final phase into game. A few seconds after substitution, Sarkaria served Christoph Monschein with an ideal cross but he only hit the bar - Austria was not lucky (89'). The “Violets” were eliminated after a tough fight and despite good performance in the round of 16 of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup.
