Qualification for the UEFA Women's Champions League is special for the Violet women in several respects. Not only is it their first participation in an international competition, but the mini-tournament will also be held in Vienna. In just over two weeks, the UEFA Women's Champions League will come to Vienna. In their first UWCL qualifying match, the Violets will face Glasgow City on Wednesday (27 August, 7 p.m.).
Due to Austria's position in the UEFA rankings, Austria Wien will skip the first qualifying round and automatically enter the second round. This takes the form of a mini-tournament consisting of semi-finals and a final, as well as a match for third place. While the winners of the mini-tournaments advance to the third qualifying round of the UWCL, the third and second-placed teams move on to the respective qualifying round of the new Europa Cup. As the Violets were drawn into the only group of three in Q2, the third-place play-off is not applicable and, in the event of a defeat in the first game, they would still automatically qualify for the Europa Cup.
If Stefan Kenesei's team can prevail against Glasgow City, they will face FC Minsk in the final of the mini-tournament. This important match will be played on Saturday (30 August, 2 p.m.) at the Franz-Horr-Stadion, where the violet women will fight for a place in the third qualifying round of the UWCL and move one step closer to reaching the league phase.
Further details about the venue for the match against Glasgow City will follow shortly.
