Austria Wien is the first football club in Austria to adopt the working definition of Antisemitism of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) and thus wants to make an important contribution to the fight against Antisemitism. The signatures were made by board member Gerhard Krisch and sporting director Manuel Ortlechner at a conference against Antisemitism held by Chelsea FC at the Generali Arena event location on Thursday.
Board member Gerhard Krisch: "With our signature, we want to send a clear message against Antisemitism and discrimination of any kind. We are aware of the social responsibility that Austria Wien bears as a soccer club in society, and we gladly accept this responsibility with conviction."
Oskar Deutsch (President of the Jewish Community Vienna): "By adopting the IHRA definition of Antisemitism, FK Austria Wien is setting a good example. It is the basis for further engagement against hostility in our society, be it in the stadium, in the pub, or in social media. The match against Antisemitism is not a friendly one, but one in which all Bundesliga clubs, as well as clubs in amateur football, must show their colors."
The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's working definition is intended to help identify Antisemitism early and combat it effectively by raising awareness of what can be tolerated as an expression of opinion and where the line to Antisemitism is crossed.
The working definition of Antisemitism:
"Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities."
