Austria Wien celebrated a 2-0 home victory against St. Pölten

In icy temperatures 9,000 spectators were able to celebrate a clear home victory in the Generali-Arena. Uros Matić and Florian Klein scored the goals in the first half.

Coach Thomas Letsch made four changes to his starting line-up after the 2-1 victory against Admira: Thomas Ebner was not allowed to play after his fifth yellow card, James Jeggo took his place in the defensive midfield. In the defence, Michael Madl celebrated his starting line-up comeback, he started next to Igor in central defence. Dominik Prokop returned to the midfield and Bright Edomwonyi started as striker instead of Kevin Friesenbichler, who was having back problems.

St. Pölten coach Ranko Popovic relied on the line-up from the game against Wacker Innsbruck, only Daniel Drescher replaced the sick Michael Ambichl.

Matić and Klein scored the lead

St. Pölten had the first chance to score, but Patrick Pentz had little trouble with Rene Gartler’s finish (6'). On the other side, Christoph Riegler parried a shot by Edomwonyi (8'). Florian Klein passed to Dominik Prokop, whose shot was deflected to the corner (20'). After another corner by Uros Matić a finish by Edomwonyi was blocked (23'). It was Matić himself who provided the violet lead with a strong shot from about 20 meters. The remarkable goal was set up by Dominik Prokop (24').

Austria Wien had the game under control after the lead, Riegler prevented a pass to Maximilian Sax after a counterattack over Prokop (35'). The guests form Lower Austria didn’t show much, a header by Gartler was cut short because he was offside (37'). Prokop was fouled by Manuel Haas just before the goal line, Sax shot the free-kick on Edomwonyi. The Nigerian's header landed with Florian Klein, who pressed the ball over the line - 2-0 (42'). Shortly after referee Dominik Ouschan whistled to the well-deserved break.

The ‘Violets’ held their lead

After the break you could still see a dominant home team, a free-kick by Sax was turned over the bar by Riegler (48'). Matić stepped up to the following corner-kick, a header by Michi Madl was deflected by Drescher in front of the line (49'). A shot by Christoph Monschein parried Riegler (57'), on the other side, the substitute Balic tried his luck from a distance but missed the goal (59'). Sax took over a free-kick in the midfield, but the ball went past the goal (66').

Thomas Letsch strengthened the defensive in midfield with Vesel Demaku for Dominik Prokop, Ewandro replaced Edomwonyi to provide new momentum in the offensive. Wide shots by Fountas for the guests and Jeggo missed their target (77', 80'). Letsch made his last change with Christian Schoissengeyr for Michael Madl. Rene Gartler hit the pole from close range after a free-kick by Meisl (85'). Ewandro missed after a pass by Matić - the last chance of the game. Austria Wien won 2-0 against the defensively strongest team in the league.
