Fenerbahçe took an early lead through Joshua King. The Violets held up well before Serdar Dursun made it 0:2 in the 89th minute. Austria lost Florian Wustinger and Muharem Husković to injuries, Lucas Galvão saw yellow red shortly before the end and will thus be missing in the second leg next Thursday in Istanbul.
Manfred Schmid opted for a three-man or five-man defense against Fenerbahçe's offensively strong team. Billy Koumetio started alongside Lukas Mühl and Lucas Galvão in defense. In the defensive midfield, Schmid again relied on Florian Wustinger alongside Matthias Braunöder. Muharem Husković started up front, with Haris Tabaković taking a seat on the bench for the time being.
Fenerbahçe coach Jorge Jesus brought in seven new players after the 6-0 loss to Kasimpasa, with Emre Mor missing due to a yellow suspension.
Austria started confidently into the European Cup match, Manfred Fischer had the first chance with a long shot - but it went over the goal (4th). However, it was the visitors from Istanbul who took the lead: after a pass from Diego Rossi, Norwegian Joshua King scored ice-cold to make it 0:1 (8.). A shot by Reinhold Ranftl after a nice pass by Dominik Fitz was blocked (16.).
After 20 minutes Florian Wustinger injured his knee without any external influence, Haris Tabaković came into the game. Manfred Fischer took Wustinger's position, Tabaković stormed next to Husković. İsmail Yüksek fired a shot towards the Austria goal, Christian Früchtl was on the spot (22nd). Dominik Fitz tried to outsmart Altay Bayındır in the Fenerbahçe goal with a free kick, but failed (32nd). Tabaković put a header just beside the goal after a perfect cross from Matthias Braunöder (35.). After a mistake in the forward movement, Fenerbahçe had another top chance, but Serdar Dursun's finish landed in the outer net (41.). In stoppage time, Muharem Husković was forced off with a hip injury and was replaced by Aleksandar Jukić after the break. Austria went into the half-time break with a narrow deficit.
Dominik Fitz opened the second half with a shot across goal, Braunöder provided the assist (47th). A turning shot by Manfred Fischer was blocked (60th).
Fenerbahçe tried to control the game in the second half, but could not create any big scoring chances. Austria struggled offensively, with Can Keles replacing Dominik Fitz after 75 minutes. Lucas Galvão saw the yellow-red card shortly before the end. Johannes Handl, who was fit again, came into the game, Haris Tabaković had to go out for tactical reasons. Fenerbahçe scored their second goal rather fortunately in the 89th minute, Serdar Dursun made it 0:2. A last chance by Manfred Fischer was defused by Bayındır (90.+7).
Austria has to admit defeat to Fenerbahçe with 0:2, the return match will take place next Thursday in Istanbul.
