Johannes Eggestein is now an Austria Wien player! The 27-year-old striker most recently played for FC St. Pauli in the German Bundesliga and has signed a contract with the Violets until summer 2028. Eggestein is already eligible to play in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League.
'I am delighted to be here in Vienna with such a traditional club as Austria. I know that Austria Vienna has a very wide reach and support, and I am really looking forward to the first games. I am pleased to be able to accompany the club in its development and hope that we can celebrate success as soon as possible,' says Johannes Eggestein.
The striker, who was born in Hanover, started playing football as a child at TSV Schloß Ricklingen and played in the youth team of TSV Havelse, now in the third division, until 2013. At the age of 15, he moved to the SV Werder Bremen academy and immediately became the top scorer in the U17 Bundesliga North/North-East. He achieved the same feat in 2014/15 and 2015/16 in the U19 competition, after which he received his first professional contract in the summer of 2016.
In the following season, Eggestein played for Bremen's second team in the 3rd division and also made his debut for the Werder professionals in the DFB Cup. He made his Bundesliga debut on 26 August 2017 against FC Bayern Munich. By autumn 2020, Eggestein had played 55 games for Werder Bremen before moving on loan to LASK for the 2020/21 season, where he met then assistant coach Stephan Helm. He made a total of 39 appearances for the Upper Austrians in the Bundesliga, the ÖFB Cup and the UEFA Europa League, scoring 20 goals.
He did not score against Austria Wien, but he did score in the European Cup against Royal Antwerp – his new club from summer 2021. Eggestein made 25 appearances for the Belgians, mostly coming off the bench. From 2022/23, he played for FC St. Pauli and quickly became a regular. While the Hamburg team finished fifth in his first season, they won the championship a year later and were promoted to the German Bundesliga. In total, Eggestein played 85 games and scored 20 goals for St. Pauli over the last three years.
Sporting director Manuel Ortlechner: 'We are very pleased to have signed Johannes Eggestein, a highly sought-after player. We have been in close contact over the past few weeks and, as Stephan Helm's dream signing, he is a perfect fit for our team, both in terms of his sporting ability and his personality. Jojo is at a great age, has proven his footballing qualities in the German Bundesliga, among other places, and is a very intelligent player who can cover several positions in attack. This is both valuable and forward-thinking in view of possible departures in this transfer window.'
