Austria wins the derby in Hütteldorf!

After an outstanding performance in the Vienna derby, Austria celebrated its fourth win in a row and moved up to fifth place in the table. Taeseok Lee put the Violets ahead in the first half, but Rapid equalised immediately after the restart with a penalty. But the Violets struck back immediately: Abubakr Barry scored to restore the lead, and Noah Botić made it 3-1. Philipp Wiesinger was sent off, but the Violets' defence, together with the formidable Samuel Şahin-Radlinger, did not allow any more goals.

Aleksandar Dragović reported fit to head coach Stephan Helm ahead of the 347th Vienna derby, who made only one change following the 3-2 win against SV Ried: Noah Botić started up front alongside Johannes Eggestein this time, replacing Manprit Sarkaria.

Rapid drew 1-1 against GAK last week, and coach Peter Stöger made three changes to his starting line-up, with Furkan Demir, Tobias Gulliksen and Matthias Seidl left out. Bendeguz Bolla, Andrija Radulović and Martin Ndzie were new to the team.

Taeseok Lee put the Violets ahead

Austria let the hosts take control of the game early on, with Samuel Şahin-Radlinger saving the Violets from an early deficit with a good save from Claudy Mbuyi (4'). At the other end, Noah Botić appeared in front of Rapid goalkeeper Niklas Hedl after a pass from Johannes Eggestein, but Hedl fished the ball out of the near corner (14'). Şahin-Radlinger was on hand once again to deny Radulović (23'), but Austria took a 1-0 lead shortly afterwards. Eggestein played a perfect pass to Taeseok Lee on the counterattack after a corner from Hütteldorf, and the South Korean, who had started from his own half, left Nikolaus Wurmbrand in his wake and fired home to give the Violets the lead (24')! The VAR overruled the original offside decision.

Lee tried his luck with a long-range shot after one of numerous corners (five in the first half), but Hedl was able to secure the ball (30'). Sanel Šaljić shot wide, Şahin-Radlinger shone with another brilliant save against a header from Mbuyi (35th, 37th). Abubakr Barry was shown a yellow card and will therefore miss next week's match against Blau-Weiß Linz.

Rapid increased the pressure towards the end of the first half, but the Violets' defence stood firm – 0-1 at half-time.

Exciting second half with lots of joy for the Violets

The second half began turbulently. Wurmbrand fell after contact with Barry in the penalty area. Referee Walter Altmann awarded a penalty, and Claudy Mbuyi converted from the spot to make it 1-1 (48'). But the Violets were unfazed, and Austria regained the lead almost immediately after the kick-off. Lee brought the ball into the middle, Eggestein laid it off to Barry, and Hedl could only clear the ball behind the line – 1-2 in the 49th minute.

Substitute Tobias Gulliksen shot wide, and a shot from Eggestein was blocked (53', 56'). Radulović also missed the goal (58'), but then the purple half of Vienna had reason to cheer again: Eggestein won the ball on the right, Barry played Naoh Botić perfectly free with a cross-goal pass, and the Australian scored his first Bundesliga goal to make it 1-3 (59').

Kelvin Boateng replaced Botić 25 minutes before the end, and Šaljić missed the chance to seal the win in the 69th minute. Philipp Wiesinger was shown a red card after a professional foul on Martin Ndzie, and Şahin-Radlinger saved Bolla's subsequent free kick from the edge of the penalty area (77').

Luca Pazourek and Philipp Maybach came on for Johannes Eggestein and Sanel Šaljić. Reinhold Ranftl moved back into central defence, and Austria had to survive 15 long minutes with one man down.

But Aleks Dragović and his teammates didn't let anything slip, and Austria ultimately deserved their 3-1 win, closing the gap on the league leaders to four points.
