Thomas Letsch tried to hold up against the European League quarter-finalists with a change to a 3-4-3 system. Patrick Pentz started in the goal once again, the back-three formation was formed by Michael Blauensteiner, Michael Madl and Ruan. Florian Klein and Stefan Stangl started on the wings, Tarkan Serbest – back after his suspension - and Raphael Holzhauser covered the central midfield. Letsch trusted Venuto, Christoph Monschein and Felipe Pires in the offensive.
With Marin Pongracic, Reinhold Yabo, Fredrik Gulbrandsen, Takumi Minamino and Hannes Wolf Salzburg coach Marco Rose send five fresh players onto the field, after his team’s successful game against Dortmund.
Austria Wien started confident, a finish by Monschein was blocked by Salzburg’s defensive (2'). The hosts had their first chance through Minamino, but his shot missed the goal (7'), a shot by Wolf went over the goal (13'). However, Andre Ramalho scored via head after a free-kick by Yabo - 1-0 for Red Bull Salzburg (17').
After that Salzburg had the game more under control, the “Violets” had a hard time creating chances and were lucky, that referee Andreas Heiss showed Ruan only a yellow card after a harsh attack on Gulbrandsen (30'). A shot by Pires during stoppage time, which Walke parried, finished the first half in the Red Bull Arena.
After the break, Dominik Prokop came onto the field for Ruan, thereby coach Thomas Letsch created a back four. Patrick Pentz saved a great shot by Gulbrandsen (48'), on the other side shots by Stangl and Venuto missed the goal (48', 49'). After a cross by Ramalho, Gulbrandsen put a header near the goal (51'), Dominik Prokop also missed the goal after good individual performance (58'). In return Minamino scored after an assist by Wolf, 2-0 with Salzburg’s first shot on the goal after the break (59').
Dominik Prokop beautifully prepared the next opportunity for Austria Wien, but Raphael Holzhauser missed with his volley (62'). Salzburg did a better job shortly after, Minamino scored for the second time, 3-0 for the hosts (67'). A shot by Stefan Lainer went over the goal (67'), a cross by Andreas Ulmer was deflected by Florian Klein into his own goal – 4-0 (72'). The game was decided.
Patrick Pentz won in a duel against Munas Dabbur (76'). Ibrahim Alhassan and Kevin Friesenbichler came into the game during the final minutes, Prokop and Serbest tried it with long shots, but missed (87'). Substitute Jerome Onguene scored the final goal – 5-0 in the 90th minute. Munas Dabbur was injured in a collusion with Stefan Stangl during the last action, we wish Salzburg’s top scorer a full and rapid recovery.
