Doing good for his anniversary

Tarkan Serbest faces his 100th Bundesliga match for Austria Wien and takes his anniversary as an opportunity to set a good example as an Austria Wien player and donate to the needy. But for now, only a victory against WSG Tirol counts for the long-time ‘Violet’.

Austria Wien still has two accounts to settle with the newly promoted team, the cuts from the defeats during the Bundesliga kick-off and in the Cup are still deep. ‘We now have the opportunity to do better at home in front of our own fans. We have imagined the season start quite different, just like everyone else in the Austria Wien family.

I'm not talking about a draw against WSG Tirol, only a victory counts,’ said the 25-year-old. At the same time, it is important for the whole club to provide a platform for important social projects within the framework of the “Violet-is-more-day" at the home game against WSG Tirol. Tarkan Serbest combines both: the sport and the good cause. ‘Of course, football always comes first, because the performances on the pitch are vital for Austria Wien and me, but social projects should be almost as important.’

Soon his new commitment to the club’s project “Max and Lara, Say no to sick and poor” will be presented. In addition, Serbest wants to do even more for his 100th Bundesliga game. ‘For the occasion I want to put together one hundred packages with gloves, hoods and socks and give them to people in need before the winter through social organizations in Vienna.’

A lot has to go better on the pitch

The 25-year-old is also worried about Austria Wien’s depressing performance. ‘It's been going on throughout the season, we cannot manage to play well over the full distance. We started very well in St. Pölten, did not use our chances and did not defend ourselves enough. We cannot give anything away now,’ says Serbest, for whom it is no problem to switch between defensive midfielder, offensive midfielder and centre-back.

‘Since we had a lot of injured players in the back, I helped out in the defence. The team feels better and more stable with the back three or five formation - we just have to keep going and make sure we play as against Sturm and Altach, which we could win without conceding a goal.’ He also wants to use his experience from Turkey, where he played during the preseason for Kasimpasa for one year, ‘I personally learned a lot, I was away from my family and I became more independent. Athletically, I had a very good year, I played 40 games, was able to learn from fellow Champions League players, and the Turkish league is full of intense games, many former superstars and incredible stadiums.’

‘That's why Austria Wien is like home to me’

Where his “100th" started for Austria Wien? ‘Away against Altach’ comes quick like a shot, as Tarkan Serbest thinks of his Bundesliga debut. Since October 18th,2014 a lot has changed at Austria Wien. From the former squad only Alex Grünwald is left. Does Tarkan Serbest feel like a veteran at 25? ‘Of course, I know the whole club very well - I know our masseur Holdi, our equipment manager Harry and Gitti, as well as most of the office staff and our fans for a long time. That's why it's like home to me. It's always nice to come to work,’ says the Viennese, whose violet path goes back much further, of course.

15 years ago, the then 10-year-old came from SV Donau to Austria Wien, playing in the U11 with, among others, Ismael Tajouri-Shradi. ‘It was already a big change. At Austria Wien, the interactions with the players was much more professional and the training more intense. I had a great time with the Austria Wien rookies and found friends for life. At the same time, I knew even then that only very few of us would make it to the pros, so I did not go home after school and training to do homework, I kept played in the park.’

Between school, training, playing football in the park and homework Tarkan learned some important values from his parents: ‘My parents always said: If I have the opportunity to help other people, then I should do so - thank God that is the case. I have always wanted to help other people. I'm also convinced that if you do good, it will eventually come back to you’
