Good fight against WSG Tirol ends in a 2-2

Eric Martel shot the early lead for the “Violets”, Nikolai Frederiksen and Raffael Behounek turned the game. Benedikt Pichler scored the 2-2 shortly before the end.

Peter Stöger made a change, Eric Martel returned to the starting line-up after his suspension. Alexander Grünwald had to take a seat on the bench. Aleksandar Jukić was back in the squad.

WSG Swarovski Tirol, the surprise team of the season, was guest in the Generali-Arena. Coach Thomas Silberberger saw no reason for a change, he sent the same team on the field, which defeated Altach 3-1 on Wednesday.

Debut goal by Eric Martel

Strong start for the “Violets”, after a few seconds Dominik Fitz missed a cross by Benedikt Pichler. The ball already ended in the goal in the 7th minute. Georg Teigl got a bad shot by Ferdinand Oswald, Eric Martel volleyed his cross from the right and scored his first goal in the tipico Bundesliga.

A similar action was noted a little later, but Pichler put another cross by Teigl next to the goal (9’). Patrick Pentz was wide awake when he saved a shot by Kelvin Yeboah (10’). Benedikt Pichler was pushed aside by Teigl after a beautiful pass (15’). Commotion in Austria Wien’s penalty area gave Raffael Behounek a chance to score, Patrick Pentz was able to fend off (18’).

Peter Stöger had to change twice early on. Both defensive midfielders had to leave the field due to injuries. Thomas Ebner was replaced by Alexander Grünwald because of muscle problems in his thigh, Johannes Handl came for Eric Martel (ankle injury). Handl found himself in the back four on the right, Stephan Zwierschitz moved into midfield.

Nemanja Celic saved a shot by Manprit Sarkaria on the line (29’). Benedikt Pichler put an overhead kick just next to the goal during stoppage time (45t’+ 2’). A very muddled first half came to an end with a well-deserved lead for the “Violets”.

Turbulent second half

Fabian Koch had the first chance after the break, Patrick Pentz safely parried (51’). After that, however, it was the home teams turn again: Oswald turned a free kick by Manprit Sarkaria onto the bar with his fingertips, shortly after the Tyrolean goalkeeper prevented Sarkaria from scoring the 2-0 (55’, 57’). After the next corner, Fabian Koch cleared a header by Benedikt Pichler in front of the line (57’). Pichler appeared in front of Oswald, again the goalkeeper remained the winner (58’).

Unfortunately, the missed chances to score took revenge, Nikolai Baden Frederiksen scored after a pass by Nemanja Celic - 1-1 (61’). Dominik Fitz missed a chance after a counterattack via Pichler (66’). Peter Stöger strengthened the offensive after the equalizer, Patrick Wimmer and Aleksandar Jukić replaced Dominik Fitz and Alex Grünwald.

WSG countered through substitute Zlatko Dedic, Patrick Pentz saved against Frederiksen in a 1-on-1 duel (73’). Referee Oliver Drachta overlooked a clear handball by Benjamin Pranter in the penalty area, a penalty shot would have been due (77’). Wattens turned the game around in the 85th minute. A cross by Dedic hit the crossbar, Raffael Behounek used the follow-up shot and scored the 1-2. The anger lasted only for a short time, Benedikt Pichler immediately equalized after assist by Jukić (87’).

During stoppage time, a shot by Zwierschitz was blocked, Markus Suttner saw yellow-red shortly before the end. The score did not change anymore, Austria Wien and WSG Tirol parted 2-2. The quarterfinals of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup against FC Red Bull Salzburg are on the program next Saturday.
