After the disappointing defeat in the Cup, the head coach had to make a number of changes to his team. Samuel Şahin-Radlinger returned in goal. Philipp Wiesinger replaced the suspended Aleksandar Dragović in central defence. The veteran started on the left side of defence, Tin Plavotić in the centre and Johannes Handl on the right. Marvin Potzmann started in midfield for the first time since the first round, while Dominik Fitz was suspended for yellow cards. Andreas Gruber was not in the squad due to muscular problems.
Dietmar Kühbauer had to watch the game from the stands. The starting line-up was changed in three positions following the successful run to the cup final. Mamadou Diabaté, Boris Matić and Markus Pink started in place of Nicolas Wimmer, Adis Jasic and Angelo Gattermayer.
Austria were keen to take an early lead, which was quickly apparent. Matteo Pérez Vinlöf and Tin Plavotić fired the first shots, but missed their target (5', 16'). Dominik Baumgartner saved Maurice Malone's cross at the last moment from the completely free Nik Prelec (19'). Shortly afterwards, Prelec had the best chance of the game up to that point, beautifully released by Manfred Fischer and Reinhold Ranftl, but Markus Pink prevented the Violets from making it 1-0 with a tackle (22'). Plavotić got on the end of a corner - which was taken by Pérez Vinlöf today - but shot over (36').
The home side had more possession and had already fired six shots, but WAC goalkeeper Nikolas Polster did not have to intervene. 0-0 at the break.
Reinhold Ranftl opened the second half with a good shot that went just over the goal (47'). Wolfsberg hardly had any chances, but in the 65th minute Matteo Pérez Vinlöf made a great save to keep Maximilian Ullmann's shot off the line. Then it was Ranftl's turn again, but he shot over (76').
Stephan Helm only made his first substitution in the 80th minute, with Moritz Wels coming on for Marvin Potzmann. A little later, Marko Raguž replaced Nik Prelec. Abubakr Barry had a chance to score, but missed by a wide margin (87'). The final change - Konstantin Aleksa for Maurice Malone - had no effect and the game ended goalless.
