Thomas Ebner made his comeback against SK Sturm Graz, he started on the left in the back three instead of the suspended Igor. James Jeggo and Uroš Matić were in the starting line-up instead of Vesel Demaku and Maximilian Sax.
Sturm Graz coach Roman Mählich was forced to make changes after the victory against SKN St. Pölten, because Fabian Koch and Stefan Hierländer were suspended. Anastasios Avlonitis and Ivan Ljubic replaced them, Lukas Spendlhofer began on the right in the back. Gideon Mensah and Michael John Lema were also new in the lin-up.
Both teams began quite aggressive and disciplined in the defensive, scoring chances were in short supply during the initial phase. In the 6th minute Ivan Lučić was able to stand out against Markus Pink, but Pink was standing offside anyways. Christoph Monschein made a shot from acute angle, which went clearly over the goal (13’). After a free-kick by Dario Maresic Pink came to another finish, Lučić was on the spot as well as a little later for a shot by Lema (20’, 26’).
Sturm Graz went into the lead in the 29th minute, Otar Kiteishvili finished thoughtfully into the short corner after a cross by Spendlhofer. Austria Wien didn’t let themselves get confused by the goal and were able to equalize shortly after: Monschein took on a failed return pass by Gideon Mensah, but failed on Siebenhandl, Alexander Grünwald skilfully pressed the technically difficult follow-up shot over the line – 1-1 (33’).
Uroš Matić made a great pass on Grünwald, but the captain’s finish was prevented by Mensah and Avlonitis (36’). Christian Schoissengeyr had to be treated for a long time after several clashes, but could continue for now. With a header after a free kick by Grünwald he put pressure on Siebenhandel during stoppage - Sturm’s goalkeeper turned the ball over the crossbar (45’+ 2’). Christoph Monschein had the last chance of the first half after assist by Florian Klein, Avlonitis prevented the violet lead with a tackle (45’+4’). With the 1-1 referee Markus Hameter sent both teams into the dressing rooms.
Christian Schoissengeyr could not play the second half because of an ankle injury, Alexandar Borkovic took his place in central defence. In the beginning the second half brought advantages for the home team, but Austria Wien turned the game anyways: A counterattack over Prokop and Monschein luckily reached Alexander Grünwald. With a "Zidane spin" he danced through Sturm’s defence and shot over Siebenhandl – 2-1 (57’).
A shot by Kiteishvili missed the goal (65’). Robert Ibertsberger brought Max Sax for Dominik Prokop, Thomas Ebner’s good performance came to an end after 74 minutes. Vesel Demaku came for the final phase. A header by Pink went past the goal (70’), a shot by Spendlhofer was too high (79’). On the other side Spendlhofer made a save on the line after Monschein went around Siebenhandl after assist by Grünwald (80’). Austria Wien’s defensive cleared against the substitutes Jakupovic and Eze, in return Christoph Monschein decided the game in favour of the ‘Violets’. Alexander Grünwald sent the striker forward, Siebenhandl didn’t have a chance – 1-3 (85’).
During the final minutes Sturm Graz wasn’t able to do much, except a finish by Huspek, Borković made the save (90’+4’), Austria Wien won 3-1 in Graz and levelled with the Syrians in the standings. The tight starting position with two laps to go creates tension in the fight for the European Cup places before the final games against WAC and LASK.
