Austria and LASK drew 0-0 in the 16th round of the ADMIRAL Bundesliga, with the Violets having the better chances to score but both sides lacking the final touch in the freezing cold at the Generali-Arena.
Michael Wimmer had to do without the suspended Lucas Galvão against LASK, with Marvin Martins starting in his place. Otherwise, the starting XI remained unchanged. Romeo Vučić took the place of the slightly injured Alexander Schmidt on the bench.
Linz had to make do without Sascha Horvath and Robert Zulj at short notice after the difficult away game in Liverpool. Ebrima Darboe replaced Horvath in the starting eleven, with Moussa Kone coming in for Zulj. Marin Ljubicic initially took his place on the substitutes' bench, while Thomas Goiginger moved into the starting line-up in defence. Lenny Pintor, Rene Renner and Branko Jovičić were also new to the team.
Austria made their first appearance in front of Tobias Lawal's goal after just 17 seconds, but Andreas Gruber's shot after Manuel Polster's feed was blocked. A great combination via Aleksandar Jukić, Gruber and Reinhold Ranftl also ended in the Linz defence (6'). A shot from Polster missed the target (10').
In a match characterised by high pressing, LASK got into the game better after 20 minutes without creating any major scoring chances. A remarkable volley from Manfred Fischer was also blocked (39'), and even after 40 minutes neither team had found the net.In the 45th minute, Lawal had to save a free-kick from Andi Gruber, but had little trouble doing so. The game in the bitterly cold Generali-Arena went into the break at 0-0.
Both teams came out of the break with the same personnel, but the Violets got off to another lightning start. Manfred Fischer put a header just wide of the post after preparatory work from Jukić (46'). Michael Wimmer made his first substitution after an hour. Muharem Husković and Dominik Fitz came on for Andreas Gruber and Fisnik Asllani.Dominik Fitz's first shot - slightly deflected - was saved by Lawal (66'). Filip Stojković thwarted a top opportunity from Manuel Polster on the counter-attack, and a minute later Fitz missed the goal by a few centimetres with his head after Fischer's cross (76', 77').
Matthias Braunöder replaced captain Manfred Fischer ten minutes before the end.
Substitute Florian Flecker tried to surprise Früchtl with a shot from an acute angle. However, the shot hit the outside of the net and Polster failed to beat Lawal on the counter-attack (82'). Braunöder missed, Romeo Vučić came on for Aleksandar Jukić shortly afterwards - the last change for the Violets (87'). Husković missed Vučić's pinpoint pass by a hair's breadth in the 95th minute and the game ended goalless.
