After the last-minute win in St. Pölten, Robert Ibertsberger changed his team on two positions: Maximilian Sax and Dominik Prokop, who had recently been ill, started for Uroš Matić and Alon Turgeman, who was suffering from adductor problems. Captain Alexander Grünwald returned for the first game after his 30th birthday in the central midfield, Ivan Lučić was preferred over Patrick Pentz again.
Salzburg coach Marco Rose almost completely changed his team after winning the UNIQA ÖFB Cup on Wednesday: With Vallci, Todorovic, Bernede, Minamino, Szoboszlai, Daka and Prevljak seven new players started, Bernede even had his starting line-up debut.
Salzburg had plenty of possession during a hectic opening phase, but without being able to bring the ball into the dangerous zone. Max Sax had the first big chance of the game: After teamwork with Christoph Monschein he came to a finish from a half-left position, but his shot was blocked to the corner by Stankovic (10’).
Austria Wien played very concentrated and worked out much more concrete chances. First it was Sax again, who came to a dangerous finish after a pass by Monschein (28’). After Vesel Demaku won the ball it came over Dominik Prokop to Monschein in the front, Stankovic was able to parry again (33’). Dominik Prokop had the last big chance during the first half, ideally served by Max Sax, he made a great shot, which was warded off to the corner by Salzburg’s goalie. It got dangerous again in Salzburg’s penalty area, but referee Alexander Harkam decided to end the first half even though the ‘Violet’s would have had another corner kick.
Salzburg was much more agile after the break and the ‘Violets’ were lucky that the ‘Bulls’ could not use their chance after a series of errors by Austria Wien while moving backwards, but Prevljak’s goal didn’t count because of an offside position (55’). Salzburg increased the pressure and came to some chances. In addition, coach Marco Rose brought with Munas Dabbur, Hannes Wolf and later Fredrik Gulbrandsen three regular players - a clear signal that the Cup winner wanted to win.
But initially it turned out differently: Corner by Alexander Grünwald, Stankovic fended off to the corner of the box, where Dominik Prokop scored volley into the near corner – An amazing goal! Stankovic, who had saved his team several times, had no chance (71’).
Ibertsberger’s team then took command again and had good opportunities. A long-range shot by Grünwald was again saved to the corner by Stankovic (80’).
How brutal football can be, could be seen in the last ten minutes of the game: First, Schlager was able to equalize (81’), only a little later, a shot by Wolf ended up in the far corner - the lead for Salzburg (86’), they had turned the game completely upside down within minutes. Especially aggravating both shots were deflected and Ivan Lučić had no chance. A header by Monschein during the last minute remained the only chance to equalizer for Austria Wien – with this win Salzburg secured their championship title three rounds before the end and after the Cup victory last Wednesday, the double win.
