Austria takes point in Vienna derby

The Violets took the lead already in the 1st minute through Matthias Braunöder, Ercan Kara equalized after 25 minutes through a penalty kick. The match ended in a 1-1 draw and Austria remains unbeaten at the Allianz Stadium.

Markus Suttner was not yet match fit after a bruise on his hip, furthermore Manfred Schmid had to do without Muharem Husković with muscular problems. Johannes Handl replaced the captain in central defense, Aleksandar Jukić started at forward. Matthias Braunöder returned to the starting eleven in defensive midfield.

Rapid presented a new coach this week in Ferdinand Feldhofer, and his first starting eleven included four changes: Maximilian Ullmann, Dejan Petrovič, Taxiarchis Fountas and Christoph Knasmüllner started in place of Jonas Auer, Srđan Grahovac, Thorsten Schick and Thierno Ballo.

Braunöder with the lightning start, Kara equalized

The 334th Viennese derby started like a picture book: After a cross from Ziad El Sheiwi, Matthias Braunöder scored after 50 seconds to make it 1:0 for the Veilchen. Rapid had good free-kick opportunities, Taxi Fountas missed the goal from a turn (10.). Aleksandar Jukić tried to surprise Paul Gartler from an acute angle but failed (12.). El Sheiwi unfortunately got injured after a quarter of an hour without any outside help, Can Keles replaced the 17-year-old full-back. Fountas hit the outside of the net after 18 minutes before referee Walter Altmann rightly awarded a penalty after Eric Martel fouled Robert Ljubičić. Ercan Kara scored to make it 1-1 (25.).

Rapid had more of the game at that stage. A free kick from long range by Marco Grüll was saved by Patrick Pentz (30.), another free kick by Christoph Knasmüllner hit the crossbar (42.). Austria did not have another chance until stoppage time, when a shot by Keles after Georg Teigl's preparation was deflected for a corner (45.+1). With the score 1:1 the team went into the half-time break.

Second half more open, but without goals

Austria almost managed a lightning start in the second half as well, Filip Stojković prevented Aleksandar Jukić's seemingly safe opening goal with a risky tackle after a counterattack via Marco Djuričin (46th). On the other side, Pentz parried another shot by Fountas (52). Eric Martel tried a long-range shot, but missed the goal by a wide margin (54th). Ercan Kara missed a chance for the hosts in the 64th minute, Jukić shot over the goal two minutes later. Patrick Pentz was able to make a save on a shot from Ullmann (70th).

Manfred Schmid brought on Christian Schoissengeyr for Vesel Demaku with fifteen minutes remaining, and Noah Ohio and Alexander Grünwald for Marco Djuričin and Aleksandar Jukić a little later. Fountas shot over the goal as did Braunöder (82nd, 90th). Those were the last chances of a brisk game, the Viennese derby ended in a fair draw.
