Patrick Wimmer made his tipico Bundesliga debut against WAC, replacing Benedikt Pichler. Otherwise Christian Ilzer relied on the same starting eleven as against Hartberg and Rapid.
WAC achieved a 2-2 against AS Roma on Thursday, coach Mohamed Sahli added Romano Schmid and Sven Sprangler to his team compared to the 1-3 defeat against LASK in the tipico-Bundesliga.
From the beginning, Austria Wien showed that they wanted to confirm the upward trend of the past few weeks in the last game of the year. Already in the first minute they had their first shot on goal, the header by Christoph Monschein after a cross by Alexander Grünwald was too central. A cross by Dominik Fitz slipped through Alexander Kofler's hands, but Manprit Sarkaria unfortunately failed to reach the ball (6’). After a foul on Michael Madl, Austria Wien came to a free-kick at the edge of the box. Grünwald’s shot was deflected to the corner from which the leading goal was shot: via Florian Klein and Manprit Sarkaria the ball came to Alexander Grünwald, who overcame WAC’s goalkeeper Kofler volley - a magic goal – 1-0 (10’).
Austria Wien left the ball to the guests for the most part, but was always dangerous with quick counterattacks. WAC could only stop the “Violets” with fouls - four times in the first half hour. Kofler was able to fend off a shot by Sarkaria after a counterattack by Fitz (26’). WAC only became dangerous in the 34th minute during a counterattack, Anderson Niangbo - heavily pressured by Christoph Martschinko - shot over the goal from promising position. The score didn’t change until the break.
After the break Michael Liendl shot a free-kick, Ivan Lučić parried safely (47’). Austria Wien replied with a shot by Dominik Fitz, which was also defused by the goalkeeper (55’). Shortly after Patrick Wimmer tried his luck, the ball was deflected to the corner (56’). Michael Madl scored the supposed 2-0 from the corner, but referee Walter Altmann saw a foul by Martschinko (57’).
Patrick Wimmer made a remarkable debut and was replaced by James Jeggo after 68 minutes. WAC equalized in the 77th minute, Shon Weissman scored with a header after an assist by substitute Mario Leitgeb – 1-1.
Christian Ilzer reacted and replaced Dominik Fitz with Alon Turgeman, Sterling Yateke came for Manprit Sarkaria. The offensive efforts were ultimately unsuccessful, Austria Wien separated from WAC with a 1-1.
