Violets win 2-0 against Glasgow City

Austria Wien celebrated a perfect evening at the Franz-Horr-Stadion on Wednesday: with a confident 2-0 victory over Glasgow City, the Violets secured their place in the final of the second round of UEFA Women's Champions League qualification. The goals were scored by Kathi Schiechtl and Maria Agerholm. At the same time, 2,240 spectators set a new attendance record for a home game of the violet women!

The hosts took control of the game right from the start. Courtney Strode had the first big chance in the 6th minute after a fine through ball from Elisa Pfattner, but the ball missed the goal. Austria continued to dominate the game: after ten minutes, the Violets had clearly more possession, but were initially unable to score from their corners (15th minute) and a free kick by Kathi Schiechtl (21st minute), which was saved by the opposing goalkeeper.

Early control by the Violets

Glasgow was only able to break free on a few occasions. In the 25th minute, the Scots tested Austria keeper Jassi Pal for the first time, but she made a confident save. After about half an hour, the visitors found their way into the game a little better and also appeared in front of the violet goal (31'), while Austria remained dangerous from set pieces – for example in the 44th minute, when a corner sailed just over the goal.

Dream free kick brings the lead

After the break, relief came quickly: in the 49th minute, Schiechtl curled a free kick over the opposing wall and gave the Violets a 1-0 lead. The stadium erupted – and Austria continued to press forward. Lena Triendl was denied by the opposing goalkeeper in the 56th minute, and Schiechtl headed the ball over the bar from a corner (58').

Agerholm seals the deal

In the 72nd minute, head coach Stefan Kenesei made his first substitutions: Chiara Pucci came on for Tatjana Weiss and Maria Agerholm for Lena Triendl. The visitors from Glasgow now pushed forward more, but a shot in the 78th minute flew well over the goal. Shortly before the end, Schöffel created another dangerous situation with a cross to Almedina Šišić, who had also come on as a substitute (89'), before the game was decided in stoppage time: Šišić passed precisely to Agerholm, who calmly slotted home to make it 2-0 (90+3').

A final shot off the crossbar by the Scots caused another murmur in the stadium, but did not change the final score.

With this deserved victory, the Violets advance to the final of the second qualifying round, which will be played on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. against FC Minsk at the Franz-Horr-Stadion.
