‘It's an incredibly nice feeling because I didn't expect it either. The fact that I'm receiving this recognition again at the end of my career is just unbelievably wonderful, also because I know that it was a vote among the captains, coaches and sporting directors. It's a confirmation of what you invest and achieve. It shows that it's worth working hard, even if there are days when it's not always easy,’ said Verena Volkmer about her selection as the best player of the season.
The 29-year-old was voted in first place a total of 15 times and scored 103 points in the voting - record marks in each case. Behind Volkmer, who finished third in 2023/24 and was the first Austria player to be named best player of the season this year, were Sophie Hillebrand (16 points) and Maria Mikolajova (14) from SKN St. Pölten.
The goalkeeper of the season, Larissa Haidner, also plays for Austria Wien. ‘I'm very proud, but it's also thanks to the whole team and I'd like to thank every single one of my team-mates. It's a great feeling and this honour naturally motivates me for the tasks ahead. But the most important thing is that we continue to perform as a team on the pitch in the future,’ said Haidner, who came out on top with 66 points ahead of Carina Schlüter (SKN St. Pölten/45 points) and Larissa Rusek (USV Neulengbach/44).
And because all good things come in threes, Stefan Kenesei completed the trio. He was honoured as coach of the season with 51 points ahead of the current team manager Alexander Schriebl (FC Bergheim/44) and Lisa Alzner (SKN St. Pölten/41).
‘I am very happy about the three awards. They are a reward for the hard work of the entire team week after week. It is very difficult to stand up to St. Pölten all year round and I would like to thank my fellow coaches, sporting directors and captains of the ADMIRAL Women's Bundesliga for this honour. Many other players also deserved the awards this year, but of course I'm delighted that it's ours in the end.’
