Zwierschitz: “That's exactly what I wanted”

Stephan Zwierschitz looked for a new challenge in the spring and found it with Austria Wien this summer. When the ‘Violets’ showed interest, it quickly became clear to him: “I'll be a ‘Violet’.” In his first interview the 28-year-old speaks about his season goals, the fans, the stadium and coach Christian Ilzer.

This traditional club, everything around it, the modern Generali Arena and the new coach Christian Ilzer was something the defensive man really wanted after six years with FC Admira. “That's exactly what I wanted. I am glad that the transfer has gone quite fast,” says the Lower Austrian.

Since 2013, he has played a total of 195 competitive games (19 goals / 12 assists) for Admira. "Zwi", as he is called, also played in eight UEFA Europa League qualifying matches and gained a lot of experience. Of course, the stadium on ‘Verteilerkreis’ is nothing new to him.

Anticipation for the atmosphere and scenery in the Generali-Arena

"If in the future many fans shout for you instead of against you, then that's a huge incentive for a player. I'm looking forward to the games here. The atmosphere, the fans can inspire a team a lot. They give you the push you need sometimes. We can be successful together,” believes Zwierschitz.

Even though the first competitive games of the season (ÖFB Cup / 1st round between the 19th and 21st of July and league July 27th, 5pm WSG Tirol in Innsbruck) will only be in the second half of July, Zwierschitz is looking forward to it already. And he has already set his goals.

Season goal: “Play better in the league than last season”

“We all don’t want the European Cup to be over after the two games. It would be nice if we could reach the UEL group stage with our fans – especially in this great stadium,” emphasizes Zwierschitz. In the championship we want to play better, better than 2018/19.

According to Stephan, who played three international matches for the U21 ÖFB selection under Andreas Herzog in 2011, the signs are good. The new coach Christian Ilzer plays an important role in his assessment. He has already followed the path of the Styrian, when he was the assistant coach for TSV Hartberg in the 2nd league.

“He has made his ascent continuously, has gradually made his way up. Now he is rightly with Austria Wien,” says Zwierschitz. He is happy to work with him and looking forward to the season.

During the first test game last Sunday in Sieghartskirchen, Zwierschitz was able to play as the right defender in the second half. The newcomer didn’t score during the 10-0 victory, but “it was okay for the first game.” Of course, he would have liked to score his first goal, he adds after two good chances.

Saved his first goal for more important games

“I've saved that for more important games,” he jokes with a smile and took it lightly. Zwierschitz can also be put in the central defence and in the right midfield. “When asked where I feel most comfortable, I would say right-wing defender.”

Especially in his last season with Admira, the Lower Austrian mostly played in the central defence or in the right midfield. “I got used to all the positions I was put in, and I give my best everywhere,” emphasizes Zwierschitz.

He meets many familiar faces in Austria Wien’s dressing rooms

Max Sax, Thomas Ebner and Christoph Monschein, who also played for Admira, have made it easy for him to join our ‘Violets’, where he was named the team’s treasurer by captain Alex Grünwald. “I played five years with Max and Tom, and we always stayed in contact,” says the new “Violet”, who said “I do” to his wife during the summer break this year.

“We got married on June 14th,” reveals the proud father of a son. In the three weeks before the wedding, a lot of time went into the preparations.

“With friends I had a bachelor party before, we spent a nice weekend in Budapest.” With his son Fabio, who will be one in August, they spend a few days in the spa Lutzmannsburg. Unlike his father, he will probably be left-footed, as his Mom, by the way.

Maybe the junior will start his career in Sommerein (district Bruck an der Leitha) as well as his father (78 kg / 183 cm). Stephan was training as a four-year-old with his older brother, later played for ASK Mannersdorf, St. Pölten (Aka and SKN) and Admira. Now he’ll shout “Forza Viola!”
