Austria Vienna suffered a 0-3 defeat at home to FC Red Bull Salzburg in the eleventh round of the ADMIRAL Bundesliga. Kitano (8th minute), Alajbegovic (16th minute), and Trummer (55th minute) scored the goals for the visitors. The Violets dominated possession for long periods of the game but were unable to capitalize on their numerous attacking opportunities.
Compared to last week's 3-2 win in Tyrol, Manprit Sarkaria replaced the injured Sanel Šaljić, but otherwise coach Stephan Helm put his faith in the same starting eleven as last time.
Salzburg took the lead with their first chance of the game, Sota Kitano scoring with a sharp low shot after a quick attack by the visitors (8'). Manprit Sarkaria broke through on the left side for the Violets, but Johannes Eggestein's shot (13') from around eleven meters out was too central. Salzburg were efficient, with Alajbegovic making it 2-0 with a powerful shot from the edge of the box after Baidoo had broken away at high speed on the right wing.
The Violets then dominated the game. Philipp Wiesinger tried his luck from long range (25'). Mandi Fischer (29') volleyed a Sarkaria corner kick and shot just over the bar from around 20 meters. Another powerful long-range shot from Fischer (31') almost ended up in the Salzburg goal when goalkeeper Schlager failed to control the ball. Aleks Dragovic (42') from distance and Sarkaria (44') with a header from a cross by Abu Barry had further chances before the break. The Violets created numerous set pieces in the first half, but were unable to capitalize on them.
Austria remained on the front foot after the break. Barry missed a great chance from close range after good work from Botic (53'). Salzburg continued to rely on counterattacks and were successful, with Tim Trummer escaping down the right after a pass from Kitano and finishing with finesse to make it 3-0 (55').
After just over an hour, coach Stephan Helm made a triple substitution. Kang Hee Lee, Kelvin Boateng, and Tin Plavotic came on for Manprit Sarkaria, Noah Botic, and Dejan Radonjic. The Violets continued to put in a courageous performance. While Kitano shot wide for Salzburg (67'), goalkeeper Schlager made a strong save at the other end to deny Abu Barry's dangerous long-range shot. Kelvin Boateng shot over from close range under heavy pressure (73'). Dominik Nisandzic made his debut for the first team in the closing minutes, but there were no clear-cut chances in the final stages.
