Just one week after finishing the basic round of the ADMIRAL Women's Bundesliga in second place, Austria travel to Salzburg. Here, the battle for a place in the final of the SPORTLAND Niederösterreich Women's Cup is on the agenda. Austria will face FC Bergheim - a strong opponent, especially at home.
While the Violets can proudly call themselves last year's finalists, it is a first for the Salzburg team to be in the cup semi-finals. They won 1-0 at home against FC Blau-Weiß Linz / Kleinmünchen. Austria had secured their semi-final ticket with a 2-0 home win against Neulengbach.
The two teams will now meet for the third time this weekend. In the two league games, Austria won 2-0 in Vienna, but only managed a goalless draw away from home. Bergheim are a challenging opponent, especially on their home pitch, warns head coach Stefan Kenesei: ‘We have a team in Bergheim that has yet to lose a game at home. They work hard against the ball and often play to nil. That's why it will be important to score goals. We have to push ourselves to the limit and be prepared for the game to last longer than 90 minutes. Our goal - to reach the final again - is what drives us. We have the potential to achieve that, but we will be fully challenged.’
Although the Violets finished the basic round in second place in the table, they were beaten by the league leaders from St. Pölten in their final match. Despite the bitter defeat, captain Verena Volkmer is already looking ahead: ‘The defeat against SKN on Sunday hurt, of course. But regardless of whether you lose or win, you have to work through the game quickly, tick it off and concentrate on the next game. That's what we did and we're full of anticipation for the semi-final. We're expecting a tough game against an opponent who will throw everything into it. Cup matches are always something special, especially when it comes to reaching the final. We will do everything we can to achieve this goal again.’
The game kicks off on Saturday (29 March) at2 pm, ÖFB TV will broadcast live.
