Austria Wien deserved to win 2-0 against their arch-rivals from Hütteldorf and qualified for the Bundesliga champions' group. Haris Tabaković gave the Violets the lead with his seventh goal of the spring and Doron Leidner added the second after the break. Austria are now unbeaten in nine games against Rapid and finish the first half of the season in fifth place.
Coach Michael Wimmer made some changes after the unpleasant result in Graz. Reinhold Ranftl was not available due to a yellow suspension, Marvin Martins took over his position on the right wing. Matteo Meisl started in central defence alongside Lukas Mühl and Johannes Handl. In midfield, Matthias Braunöder started in place of Can Keles, Dominik Fitz was preferred to Nikola Dovedan.
Rapid coach Zoran Barišić had to do without the suspended Roman Kerschbaum and the ill Martin Moormann. Moormann was replaced by Jonas Auer and Aleksa Pejić started instead of Kerschbaum. Furthermore, Ante Bajic took the place of Bernhard Zimmermann.
Austria were well in the game due to a clear two-man advantage in a very combative opening phase. Dominik Fitz tried to overpower Rapid goalkeeper Niklas Hedl with a long shot (4th). Haris Tabaković and Lukas Mühl had header opportunities after standards by Fitz, but they did not pose much danger for Hedl (5th, 11th). Rapid had chances through Ante Bajic and Guido Burgstaller, but Christian Früchtl was on the spot (14th, 16th). Matthias Braunöder aimed a great volley towards the cross corner, Hedl also made a good save (23rd). A free kick by Fitz from a promising position landed in the wall (29th).
Marvin Martins had to leave the field after half an hour with a rib injury, Georg Teigl took his place. A shot by Braunöder went past the goal (39th). But in the 40th minute the Generali Arena was upside down, Haris Tabaković scored again! Doron Leidner did not give up a cross from Manfred Fischer that was a bit too long and brought the ball to the middle where Tabaković was right on target - 1-0!
Früchtl had to work really hard on crosses from Patrick Greil and Denso Kasius, both of which went towards goal, and saved the Veilchen from an equaliser (45th, 45th+2)), Austria went into the break with a 1-0 lead.
The Violets came back on the pitch with the same intensity in front of a sold-out crowd, Michael Wimmer did not make any personnel changes for the time being. Früchtl was alert to a cross from Kasius and a shot from Grüll (50th, 52nd), Teigl missed a shot over the goal (51st). Shortly afterwards, the purple part of the capital could cheer again: Doron Leidner took advantage of a misunderstanding in the Rapid backline and made it 2-0 with a well-placed shot into the far corner - already the seventh goal after a high ball win (53rd).
Früchtl defused an awkward free kick by Grüll, a shot by Fischer was too weak (60th, 61st). An attack by Leopold Querfeld on Dominik Fitz in the action before was deemed not worthy of a penalty by referee Julian Weinberger.
Can Keles came on after 70 minutes for the strong Dominik Fitz, shortly before the end Matan Baltaxa and Manuel Polster came on for Meisl and Leidner. Guido Burgstaller had a header on the crossbar and Oliver Strunz had a header that just missed the goal (80th, 89th). The result remained unchanged, Austria won the 338th Vienna derby with 2-0.
