Austria managed to keep the game open for a long time against the champions from Salzburg, Dominik Fitz equalised after Junior Adamu had given the visitors the lead. Adamu added two more goals after the break and Salzburg won the match 3:1.
Austria under coach Manfred Schmid started unchanged compared to Thursday's European Cup match, meaning Matteo Meisl and Manuel Polster made their Bundesliga starting debuts. Marvin Martins was back in the match squad.
Red Bull Salzburg coach Matthias Jaissle made two changes after the 1-1 draw against Dinamo Zagreb. Maximilian Wöber started on the left side of defence instead of the injured Andreas Ulmer, Junior Adamu replaced Noah Okafor in the attack.
The game started quite wait-and-see from both teams, but Red Bull Salzburg took the lead with the first real chance. Junior Adamu scored with his head after a cross from Benjamin Šeško to make it 0:1 (11th).
Austria immediately tried to equalise. Matteo Meisl narrowly missed a cross from Andreas Gruber. Strahinja Pavlović cleared for a corner, which Dominik Fitz almost converted directly. Philipp Köhn was on the spot (14). After another corner, Aleksandar Jukić finished the ball, but his difficult volley after Manuel Polster's assist missed the target (15.). A shot by Fitz after an assist from Gruber was blocked (20.).
After half an hour, the champions became more dangerous again, Adamu missed a good header opportunity (35.). But in the visitors' best phase, the Veilchen equalised: Matthias Braunöder won the ball after a throw-in by Salzburg, but Köhn was able to parry his shot. Dominik Fitz then calmly shot into the net - 1:1 in the 37th minute, which was also the half-time score.
Schmid made two changes at half-time: Can Keles came on for Andreas Gruber, Marvin Martins replaced Aleksandar Jukić. Salzburg substitute Noah Okafor scored in the 47th minute, but was offside. Keles took a shot in the 50th minute but missed the Salzburg goal. On the other side Maximilian Wöber headed just over (51st). Austria counterattacked via Fitz and Martins, Keles missed the finish, but was offside anyway (64th). Nikola Dovedan replaced Georg Teigl. There was a penalty alert in the Austria penalty area in the 70th minute, but referee Markus Hameter could rightly not see any offence by Marvin Martins against Noah Okafor.
Unfortunately, Salzburg took the lead again, Junior Adamu scored after Maurits Kjærgaard's preparation to make it 1:2 (74th). Adamu added another shortly afterwards, after a corner kick by Nicolas Seiwald, the U21 team striker scored for the third time.
Can Keles was able to get through on the right side, but his shot was blocked for a corner. Fitz took the corner to the centre and Dovedan's header was turned over the bar by Köhn (86th). Haris Tabaković came on for Manfred Fischer in injury time, but the score remained unchanged. Austria had to admit defeat to Salzburg with 1:3.
