Austria suffered a 1-3 defeat to Red Bull Salzburg at the Generali Arena. Trailing 0-2 at half-time following goals from Alajbegović and Konaté, the Violets rallied in the second half. Kelvin Boateng pulled one back, and the Violets pushed for an equaliser before Onisiwo sealed the win for Salzburg.

Head coach Stephan Helm was still without Johannes Eggestein and Philipp Maybach. Sanel Šaljić started in Maybach’s place, but began the match in a more attacking role alongside Kelvin Boateng and Vasilije Marković. Manfred Fischer dropped back into central midfield. Tin Plavotić and Kang Hee Lee returned to the squad following suspension and illness, but started on the bench.
Salzburg manager Daniel Beichler made two changes to the starting line-up following the last-minute defeat against LASK: Tim Drexler and Maurits Kjaergaard came into the team in place of Anrie Chase and Aleksa Terzic.
The start to the match was disappointing; Red Bull Salzburg took the lead as early as the third minute through Kerim Alajbegović following a mistake in build-up play. Following a pass from Sota Kitano, Karim Konaté found himself one-on-one with Samuel Şahin-Radlinger but lobbed the ball over the bar (12'). Abubakr Barry found himself in trouble during a clearance but just managed to prevent an own goal (18').
Austria struggled to get into the game, and torrential rain set in after 25 minutes. The visitors doubled their lead to 0–2 in the 28th minute, with Konaté scoring the goal. It wasn’t until the 36th minute that the Violets had their first chance, with Marković narrowly missing a cross from Boateng. Another goal by the visitors, scored by Konaté, was disallowed for a clear offside (37'). A shot by Boateng following a cross from Barry went over the bar (43'). The teams went into the dressing rooms at half-time with the score at 0-2.
By half-time, the storm had passed over Favoriten, and Tin Plavotić replaced Johannes Handl. Vasilije Marković went down twice in the penalty area, but referee Markus Hameter’s whistle remained silent in his 200th Bundesliga match (48). Alexander Schlager saved a header from Boateng following a cross from Taeseok Lee, and the follow-up shot went wide (58'). Shortly afterwards, however, the sold-out Generali Arena was able to cheer as Kelvin Boateng pushed the ball over the line following a pass from Barry – making it just 1–2.
Following a corner from Lee, Philipp Wiesinger got his head to the ball, but Schlager managed to parry it away (63'). The home side’s goalkeeper also came out on top against a great chance from Abu Barry (69'). Boateng shot over the bar, with Austria pushing for the equaliser (72').
Stephan Helm brought on Florian Wustinger and Matteo Schablas for Šaljić and Taeseok Lee. In the midst of the Violets’ attacking efforts, the newly substituted Karim Onisiwo scored to make it 1-3 (77'). Kang Hee Lee and Romeo Vučić came on for Fischer and Marković, with ten minutes remaining.
Unfortunately, further attacking efforts proved fruitless, and the Violets must continue to wait for a home win against Red Bull Salzburg. Final score 1–3.
