Despite great fight defeat against Salzburg

Austria fought a thrilling duel with the serial champions, but in the end had to admit defeat by a goal by Karim Adeyemi in the 65th minute. Georg Teigl suffered a serious shoulder injury.

Manfred Schmid fielded a completely new five-man backfield against Red Bull Salzburg. Johannes Handl was absent due to illness, and Eric Martel, Lukas Mühl and Markus Suttner started in the middle. Georg Teigl and Ziad El Sheiwi started at the outside positions. In defensive midfield, Vesel Demaku returned to the starting eleven after tearing his muscle fibers. Matthias Braunöder and Manfred Fischer started alongside him, while Muharem Husković and Marco Djuričin started against the serial champions.

Salzburg suffered a 2-1 defeat against Wolfsburg in the Champions League, with head coach Matthias Jaissle absent due to a positive Corona test. Co-coach Florens Koch was on the sidelines in his place. Oumar Solet, Bernardo, Nicolás Capaldo as well as Junior Adamu were new in Salzburg's starting eleven.

Good opportunities for Austria

Austria started the game well and had the first chances. After a corner by Matthias Braunöder, Marco Djuričin finished standing upside down to the goal , but just missed the target (3rd). Two Salzburg defensive players were cautioned early, Austria came to good free-kick opportunities. Always kicked by Braunöder, Eric Martel and Lukas Mühl had good chances to take the lead (13th, 18th).

Adeyemi with the winning goal - a pity

Luka Sučić, who was substituted at the break, managed the first shot on Austria's goal in the 50th minute, but Patrick Pentz had no problems with it. The Violets had a chance through Djuričin, but the shot was blocked (55th). The action was prepared by Ziad El Sheiwi, who shortly afterwards shot himself - unfortunately too centrally (57th). After a bad back pass from Georg Teigl, Junior Adamu had a great chance to take the lead for the visitors, but Patrick Pentz did a great job of making up for his teammate's mistake (59th). After an hour, Florens Koch brought top scorer Karim Adeyemi, who unfortunately put Salzburg in the lead shortly after. 0:1 in the 65th minute.

After a corner kick from Suttner, Djuričin came to a header chance, Philipp Köhn in the goal of the Bullen parried (67th). Georg Teigl had a great chance to equalize after a cross from El Sheiwi, but was pushed by Adeyemi and injured his shoulder. There was no penalty, Teigl had to be replaced by Leonardo Ivkić (72nd).

Manfred Schmid took full risk, bringing on Noah Ohio and Aleksandar Jukić for Husković and Braunöder, and later Alexander Grünwald and Can Keles for Manfred Fischer and Vesel Demaku. The Violets threw everything forward, but no more scoring chances could be created. Despite a great performance, it was the first home defeat since March 21.
